Wesley likely has a torn achillies

I would be thrilled to get him for 10 mil per. Even 12 before the injury. But I thought 15 was too much.

Well you can be assured he won't get anything over 12 post injury. It's unfortunate, but that's the business. Wes definitely has the capability to overcome this injury, but the risk is still high for Wes to be the same Wes before Injury. I definitely could see Allen adding a little bonus to Wes's contract for service performed though. He seems like that type of owner. He's as emotionally invested as we are to our players.

Yep.

Wes wants to be back in 5 months, but most is 8-9 months.

This is 3/6
Training camp starts at about 10/1
which is under just 7 months.
starting of the season would be just under 8 months.

My guess is that the Blazers will err on the side of caution.

You have to figure everything he says about his return date is with his contract negotiations in mind. I don't blame him a bit.
The more positive he is and the earlier he says he will be back, the easier it will be for teams to not worry about giving him a huge deal. So I guess my point is I am not going to pay attention to how soon he thinks he will return.

I completely understand what you are saying, but the hard part for me to fathom is that he would be thinking about that given the way he looked. Completely dejected, etc. I know he's a positive person, but he didn't look anything like it during that interview. I know we're talking millions of dollars, but to me, his mindset regardless of a contract year or not would have been the same, IMO. I honestly don't think he was thinking about money, or that his agent was in his ear...

I don't see how any team would throw a big ($10million+) multi year contract at a guy who is right in the middle if recovering from a ruptured achilles.
I've said before I thought Wes would break down during his next contract, but I'd match offers anyway. I still think the Blazers are in the best position to keep him, on a reasonable contract. I hope we do and I think we will.

Afflalo is the big question mark. If he will opt in it gives us a better chance of improving next year's team.

Exactly this!

Yeah you guys are probably right. Wes is the ultimate competitor. I guess I was thinking about what I would do if I were in his shoes...

This will definitely help us keep Wes. I would still really like to keep both Wes and AA though.

I would be lying if I did not admit to having tears fall down my face this morning because I was hoping to just be waking up from a bad dream. I’m sorry this response took this long but none of it felt real, and to be honest, it still doesn’t. My season is over and my will, my heart, my faith and my strength will now be tested, which is a challenge I welcome. Though my season is over, #ripcity’s season is far from over! And I will be there ‘till the end! As I read through all the messages via text and Twitter, I was in awe. I was in shock and disbelief not only because of the injury, but because I never could have imagined how many people could be genuinely hurt, sad and upset for me. To my coaches- thank you; to my brothers and teammates- thank you; to my fans and #ripcity- thank you; to my family and friends- thank you! Like most of my life, a challenge has been placed in front of me—a challenge that will be nothing but another chapter in my story. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE, SUPPOR T & PRAYERS. See you on the court next season.#arrowlife out. -Ironman

The best thing (looking for a silver lining so I don't shoot myself) is that the effectiveness of Wesley's game is not predicated on his athleticism (something that will certainly leave him after this type of injury).

Ha! Thanks for making me laugh.

I woke up feeling like I did after the Ducks lost the national championship, depressed.

Tell me about it. My two favorite teams are the SF Giants and Blazers. They each have one intense, iron man that always play through injuries and are the heart-and-soul of their respective teams. Both went down with injuries yesterday (Hunter Pence, RF for the Giants, though he'll supposedly only be out 8 weeks).

I sure as hell hope we haven't seen the last of Wes in a Blazers uniform, but it could be.....

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but they said the same about BRoy. Just because he doesn't dunk doesn't mean his game is not predicated on his athleticism. Wes is a dog when he defends guys one on one, and uses every ounce of his lateral speed and strength. He can stay in front of his guy better than anyone else on our team. And his postgame, jab steps, and slashing ability are really underrated -- all of which require his athleticism. The tiniest decline due to health can be magnified in the NBA, and needs to be thoroughly evaluated before Neil commits long term.

Man, what a tough break for Wesley. As for the Blazers, well at least they picked up Afflalo.

So what does this do to his contract year? Who will bite big on a guy with a torn Achilles? Do the Blazers re-sign him for less and for fewer years? Bummer for Wes. My favorite Blazer.

It's been a pretty depressing season in regards to injuries and deaths. We are still 3rd though!
Yep

When wes did the hyper extended knee a few weeks ago I was devastated. When he came back I really thought he was invincible. Hes going to will this team to a championship whether he can play or not. Thats just what wes does.

Blazers will miss Matthews' 3s, D

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/stor...-matthews-injury-means-portland-trail-blazers

With Afflalo playing the 34 minutes per game Matthews had been averaging, and McCollum, Gee and forward Dorell Wright filling in the rest, a projection based on the multiyear version of RPM shows Portland as a 47-win team over a full season. That's a drop of about nine wins from the Blazers' current 56-win pace.

Over the final 22 games of the season, that figures to translate into a difference of a win or two. With an eight-game lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland is all but certain to win the Northwest Division, but an extra loss or two could drop the Blazers a spot in the crowded West standings. They're currently third, but only a half-game better than the Houston Rockets, with the Los Angeles Clippers lurking two games behind. As a division winner, Portland would be guaranteed a top-four seed, but a team such as the Clippers could claim home-court advantage in a potential first-round matchup by finishing with a superior record.

Matthews' absence figures to be felt most dramatically in the playoffs. A 47-win projection would make the Blazers the least talented team in the West bracket. Portland won't be a dramatic underdog, particularly with possible home-court advantage in the opening round, but it's challenging to see the Blazers mounting a long playoff run without Matthews as an integral presence. Simulating the remainder of the season 1,000 times using Portland's post-Matthews projection shows the team advancing a little more than a third of the time, and reaching the Western Conference finals less than 10 percent of the time.

The Blazers haven't reached the conference finals since 2000, and the chances of ending that drought got far worse when Matthews crumpled to the ground Thursday night.

So now we have less than a 10% chance at the western conference finals. I might give us a slightly better chance than that. But I think we were about 40% before so this is a huge blow.
