can a legal scholar help me understand (on the civilian side) what the difference is between this and "discovery", that I'm pretty sure anyone is entitled to? Because if it's just a matter of classified data being talked about, President and his CoS by definition have the need-to-know and clearances, but maybe there's a legal nuance I'm not getting here.

Well if you don't have charges, then this becomes the question of whether the President and his CoS have a need to know about classified information about what went on with respect to his campaign and whether or not the DOJ/FBI placed informants on it. And the answer is "yes" to that. So what's the problem?I'm not a legal scholar, but you don't have discovery before you have charges/lawsuit. Cart before horse.

What do you think his 'need to know' is, anyway?

There's a few in play...What do you think his 'need to know' is, anyway?

Depends on if they get a crooked (R) judge or a crooked (D) one...How much is Don Jrs bail going to be.
They do, but the Russians have ways around ankle monitoring devicesAnd do ankle monitors still work in Russia.
There's a few in play...
1) Head of the Executive Branch
2) Potentially the victim of campaign spying
3) Foreign relations impact of intel (or counter intel)
among others...why do you think he shouldn't, especially if no charges have been filed? I mean, Mueller's missteps aren't exempt from being exploited.
Actually not true, your cynicism has gotten the better of you.
Also, there are different degrees of corruption. This is easily the most corrupt administration in the last century or so.
barfo
The answer is not yes to that, unless you think the president is above the law.
barfo
Unlike you, I don't think the FBI, DOJ, CIA, NSA, or any other agency or department UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE PRESIDENT AND FULLY ACCOUNTABLE TO CONGRESS is above the law.
It would be far less than the colossal shit storm that liberals/democrats/lefties are currently having.
You were around for the Clinton presidency no?
You're right about that. Clinton fooled around with a cigar and a blow job. Trump probably both got one of his sexual encounters pregnant as well as committed so many acts of treason that I fear no one, including Mueller, can count them all. Yep, not even comparable.Yes. Doesn't come close to comparing.

Edit: Clinton was a Rhodes scholar and a graduate in law, Trump ran the highly touted Trump University. LOL
