What are your Wes Matthews contract limits?

If we sign LMA and he comes to management and says "Match whatever Wes gets" then I sign Wes no matter what. If this is before we work things out with LMA then I tell him to go get an offer and bring it back to us otherwise i'd offer.

I think Wes comes back just fine, not worried about how he will look after his injury at all. Its going to take him a good part into next season to fully look like Wes again. Id even offer that to him if LMA leaves and then look to move him early after next years FA and Wes type players are suddenly getting 17m a year contracts.

I expect him to have a poor year next season but regain much of his form two and three years from now. Problem is at that age he'll be on the wrong side of 30 and declining. My offers to fully guarantee his deal would be

1yr - $9 mil
2yr - $22 mil
3yr - $32 mil
4yr - $42 mil

Now if he wants a nonguatanteed deal where he has to prove he's regained his previous form I'd offer something such as 50% more, which could be as much as $60 million. But the Blazers could cut him. I will be shocked if another team even matches the above amounts on a fully guaranteed deal. Most teams just won't want to take the gamble.

I could see a team such as Philly doing something really crazy where they offer him a max contract but with all sorts of nonguatantees and escape clauses. They try to sell him on being the key of transforming one of the worst teams to a playoff club. Then he either lives up to the deal and they have an asset to potentially trade for a pick or he doesn't and he has value as a nonguaranteed contract. The max contract for next season doesn't matter to them whereas the Blazers and most contenders don't have enough space under the luxury tax for such a bold move. The Cavs did a bit of a similar deal for Bynum years ago. Even though he never got healthy they then traded him for Luol Deng at the deadline so Chicago could save money.

He will be 32 in the 4th year of his contract. It differs with everyone, but you are right guards do seem to peek around 30. (That was Clyde's best year) But they still are playing pretty well at 32. Still comes back to how well he comes back from his injury.

Great thread Plat, I think I would offer a similar contract.

CJ seems like he could be our guy going forward, and while I would be stoked to have him back, but I see him getting better offers elsewhere, and coming off of an injury I've got to think that money will be a huge factor when he makes his decision about where he will be playing next season.

I think the uncertainty of the injury recovery will keep other teams from throwing exorbitant money at him, likely no more than 8 or 9 a year to start. I think he will be signed late in the process to, teams will want every last day they can get to test his recovery.
