Always thought that was overrated. I'm more into Goat's Head Soup. Dancing With Mr. D, 100 Years Ago, Heart Breaker, Angie, Starfucker.... For some reason it doesn't get the love it deserves.
To my mind Angie is the song that devalues the entire rest of the Stones' catalog. That they should be capable of producing that excrescence makes me question the worth of every other song I thought was good. Kind of like "I just called to say I love you" for Stevie Wonder.

I hadn't heard about this (the new music, not the weight loss--though not that either). I'll definitely need to check out the album--the song sounded great. JAMC are one of the bands that I consider incapable of writing a bad song, by and large.
Back in my undergraduate days, when jukeboxes still existed, and contained actual seven-inch slabs of vinyl, I played "You Trip Me Up" on the jukebox in the college bar while the guy who serviced equipment was in there. He RAN over and stopped it. When I complained, he said that he thought the machine must be broken because of all the hissing and feedback.

True story.

Jeez! It's just a fucking ballad. I Just Called To Say I Love You was Stevie Wonder paying his fucking taxes. We are getting into High Fidelity territory here, Mr. Black.

No, Sexual Healing is a fucking ballad.

Maybe it's that Mick Jagger just shouldn't sing ballads (see also "Wild Horses").

No, it's also that Angie is shit. And hey, this is the internet, so I'm practically honor-bound to be obnoxiously opinionated.

No particular order. And the list would probably change if I made it a month from now, because there are other albums I consider just about as good.

Psychocandy by Jesus & Mary Chain
Radio City by Big Star
Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub
Doolittle by The Pixies
OK Computer by Radiohead
Andorra by Caribou
Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground (...and Nico!)
On Trade Winds by Air France
We have some similar tastes.

My list, although it changes monthly:
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies
Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks
White Album by The Beatles
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Psychocandy by Jesus and Mary Chain
Drum's Not Dead by Liars
Soft Bulletin by Flaming Lips
Experimental Jetset, Trash, and No Star by Sonic Youth
Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force.

I am already upset about leaving certain things off before I've even posted it.

I really wanted to throw something by Donovan, Air, Deerhunter, Panda Bear, Elliott Smith, MC5, Wreckless Eric, The Clash, and etc....... oh, and way more Hip Hop......

That is one of the greatest albums in history. Rose For Emily and Time of The Season were some of the best songs ever written Yet the Beatles are considered geniuses and yet the Zombies don't get any love. They weren't even together when the album was released in America. Shame.

Interesting how people like what you'd guess they would by their political posts. It isn't groundbreaking insight I know but my mind is just tuned to a certain rhythm for the most part.

I get why Soil never got super huge and famous but I love it. Guy sings and occasionally does some growling type shit (which I generally hate) too much of that ruins it for me.

It really is a perfect album. I could listen to it every day for a year and still want to hear it.

Yeah, I love a lot of albums on that list. I second (third) that Odessey and Oracle is an underrated/underknown masterpiece.

I'd also like to have tossed the Shins, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Ride, New Order and a lot of other albums on the list. 1960s pop, 1970s/early '80s punk and 1990s shoegaze/noisepop tend to be right in my wheelhouse. There are things I like in every genre (even country!), but those probably constitute my "base."

When it comes to pop music, I think Seal's second album is genius and So by Peter Gabriel as well.....Living off the Wall by Michael Jackson...Quiet Storm by Smokey Robinson..then there's less popular stuff .Tell Mama by Etta James....Stephen Still first album...David Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name...Can't Buy a Thrill ...Steely Dan
man I could go on all day....Soultrane ...John Coltrane.....Looking for Columbus...Little Feat.....So Much Trouble in the world...Bob Marley and the Wailers..Full House...Wes Montgomery...Come..Prince...Joe Cocker and Maddogs and Englishmen...Chicago Transit Authority.....Fragile...Yes....

Great story. I remember someone describing JAMC as "the Beach Boys fed through Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music." I don't fully agree with that, but I've still always liked the description. It gets at the essential concept (and a great concept it is!) of drenching pure pop hooks in noise and reverb.

Others I'd consider back-to-back great albums:

#1 Record/Radio City - Big Star
Is This It/Room On Fire - The Strokes
Violent Femmes/Hallowed Ground - Violent Femmes
Isn't Anything/Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
Castaways and Cutouts/Her Majesty - The Decemberists
College Dropout/Late Registration - Kanye West
Oh, Inverted World/Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins

We have pretty similar tasters. You should check out some of my music, I bet you would find some stuff you like if you can get past the less than perfect engineering quality and production. :)

I would add Electric Warrior and The Slider by T Rex. I can't believe I left The Slider off of my list!

Holy Shit. The Zombies!!!!!! Like Dave Clark 5?

That may literally be how "Kill Surf City" was made. Although they dropped the feedback after they learned how to play a bit better.

Sidenote: Bobby Gillespie did all right for himself after he stopped being their drummer. "Screamadelica" was one of the albums of an era.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's against the law to make a topic like this and not refer to the list as "Desert Island Discs."

It's funny: I can't get my teenager to like any of my "cooler" tastes. All he listens to is The Kinks and David Bowie.

However, thanks to him I have discovered two Kinks classics of which I was completely unaware (and that confirm that Ray Davies could crap out songs that other artists would sell their right arms to write):
