These are the FA centers this summer:

Cousins -- prolly won't be back until 2019
Capela -- RFA
DeAndre -- can opt in for a 23 mil deal if he so wishes and push his FA back a year
B. Lopez
Kanter
Noel
Dedmon -- player option, only for 6 mil though
Monroe

Teams that can actually offer a deal for 15 mil+ / yr that would make us think twice about matching:
-Atlanta-- could be an option unless then end up with a big in the draft
-Brooklyn-- think they like their guy Jarrett Allen
-Indy-- Turner has his spot locked up
-Lakers -- they have sights set on bigger names in FA probably
-Philly-- not happening
-Sacramento-- possible but they have Cauley-Stein and Giles and Skal.

So we're looking at maybe ATL or BK as teams that might go after Nurk with a big offer. I think we'll be in the drivers' seat for negotiations. I really hope Neil (if he's still around) plays hardball and saves some $ given the market. We'll get a serious discount-- something along the likes of a 3 yr/ 40 mil deal or even lower is what I'm thinking.

Has shown JUST enough good play out there to be on other team's radars for sure. I think because he's only 23 and Meyers would be our starting center if he leaves, he is going to make A LOT more than you are thinking sir.

I can see him getting similar to what Plumlee got.

If Atlanta or Brooklyn offer him $20+ mil and he decides to sign the offer, I'm OK with letting him go.

Which is?
3 yrs, 41 mil. I think this is probably the upper limit for him.

The market just isn't there for a bigger contract, though. And Nurk doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would "bet on himself" and become a UFA.

I see where you are coming from, but a young big man who has shown flashes of greatness........ people will overpay for that.

He'll get Allen Crabbe, Nic Batum or Evan Turner money I think

Go get Noel for the MLE.

Have you not followed along with what Noel has done since he was drafted. The guy is bad chemistry and I doubt he would sign for around 5 mil. Anything less than a 3 year contract would prevent the Blazers from having full bird rights as well and if he produces can bolt.

I'd say he gets 18 million a year and a 4 year deal with a team option

lol People act like it's their money. We're already over the cap. Nurk is a top rim protecting center in the league and you want to give him up... for what? For free? Yeah, because that's what successful teams do. They give away prime talent for nothing. Right.

He's the second most important player on this team and he's just 23 years old. You pay the man if push comes to shove. No question.

It's not a question of my money or Paul's. It's more about getting a good (read: tradeable) contract on the books so that we won't have another Leonard/ET kind of deal on the books and destroy any flexibility we have remaining.

Nurk is a top center in this league. His situation is nothing like Meyers or Evan Turner, which by the way has no effect on flexibility. We were over the cap regardless. Pretty much every team has regrettable contracts. You can thank the CBA.

Lol, Ive never gotten the thought of " Its not your money so why do you care" Or he has billions, why should he care"

The NBA/CBA system is built so you can't just buy a superstar team, so it is imperative to have fiscal financing of a roster.

You mean other teams will offer him a lot just so Meyers becomes our starting center?

Brutal!

You can. You just have to do whar Miami and GSW did...have a group of stars take less money in exchange for an easy ring.

I don't think that's buying a superstar team though. That's superstars making it work under the regulations.

My point is there are more factors that go into account than the depth of an owners bank account. Your post is actually proving my point. :)

He's a better player, with more porential, than Mason Plumlee. He will get a significantly larger contract with Safeties written in to protect the Blazers.

Agree. The potential for Nurk to succeed is too high to let him go. It would be a major mistake.

ok, but agree or disagree that Plumlee was over paid as a back up center? I figured Plumlee should have been in the 10 mil range. $14=15mil would be realistic and if he wants more, then do a 3 year contract with a player option. We would retain bird rights and Nurk can then earn a bigger contract. There are very few teams that will have the money to pay Nurkic more money so we do have a slight edge in position of power.
