What race are you?

I've always thought that's the most pointless question there is. Race is such an ambiguous term these days. If you want to talk about skin colour, describe your complexion. If you want to talk about heritage, state your country of origin.

In the year 1978(Im pretty sure this is the Court Case, but i might be wrong) in the Court Case of the University of California Regents versus Bakke a person of a certain race was declined from a school primarily because of their race. This is called Affirmative Action, where a private school can balance the racial demographic and not accept a certain race of people simply because of their race. Say a school has a majority of asian students, then if some asians applied that had the exact same gpa, extracurriculars, and so on as an african american, latino, or other race, then they would accept the other race to balance that racial demographic. We learned about it in class today.

That's different though. Affirmative action is questionable enough as it is, but thedude implied that there's a certain quota that all universities have to fill when it comes to coloured people, which is completely different.

question 2:
i've heard that if you're even a quarter black you are considered "black". Isn't this kind of a semi-racist notion?</div>
Some times they have mixed-ethnicity or something like that...but if they don't I'll pick black over "other".

Yeah, ok, i had just heard about it this morning, so i thought it was the same. It is questionable, personallly i think that they should take the people with the best gpa and extracurriculars and so on, not just enough to make the racial demographic equal.

<div class="quote_poster">phunDamentalz Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">well there's only 4 races - White, black, asian, and latin. sooo....if not "white" where would they fit?</div>

Other?? or middle-eastern??

<div class="quote_poster">Umair Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Other?? or middle-eastern??</div>

see that's racist to you guys, why do you guys have to be the "others"? the whole thing is kind of silly. for example, if you are from Spain, are you white or Latin? You're from Western Europe, so you're white, right? But you speak the same language (almost) as Latin Americans and have the same ethnicity....
I'm white and I consider people from Spain to be the same "race" as me, but people from Mexico not the same. weird.

How the hell is Middle Eastern racist? Sand ******, Camel Jockey, Carpet rider, towel head. That's racist, not Middle eastern. (btw, I am Middle Eastern) OR Arabian.

I find the whole concept of "race" idiotic. When you talk about humans, there is only one race, the human race. It would be better to talk about what country or part of the world you originate from (counting a few hundred years back). So a white "american" is of european descent, a black "afro-american" is of african descent. Obviously, there are differences in appearance between people living on the same continent as well. North africans do not look the same as central africans, and the word "asian" doesn't say anything about a persons looks.

aren't you paki or afganistanian, either way thats not middle eastern

I'm from Estonia, North Europe. I'm totally white. ;D
