I've only posted this fact what, 5x now in this thread, only to have it ignored? This is why nothing productive happens in terms of policy. NB3 is getting slammed for calling charter schools public schools, WHEN THEY ARE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

This. There is plenty wrong with the public school system (and private school system). But my concerns would be course curriculum, students per teacher ratio, standardize testing, who the peers are, opportunity for advance classes, involvement in the community,quality of teachers, reputation and probably other things I'm not thinking about. There are no perfect schools but choosing a school that best fits the parents and student wishes is possible.

I don't see many parents putting how a school disciplines the children as being a make or break for a picking a school . . . but to each their own.

Because it shows where the priorities of the school are. Why are they worried about shit like what shirt kids are wearing, or whether they shave their heads? It's beyond stupid and they should be focusing on how poorly people are doing in school, not what they're wearing or drawing or saying. If it's a legitimate threat, fine, that is understandable, but do they need to suspend the kid drawing a fucking power ranger? No.

I had a bunch of male teachers when I was a kid, and some of them were the best teachers I ever had, but now men don't want to teach because they're afraid of being labeled a pedo. All of the fears and prejudices that are present in society today seem to be amplified in schools.

Sounds like the school jumped to a conclusion when they saw the shaved head, realized what it was all about and allowed her to return to school. Schools aren't perfect. They were following a rule, realized the situation and changed their decision. She now gets to attend school with a bald head. What's the big deal. That the school acted too quickly (which they then tried to fix) or that they have the policy in the first place (which then I would wonder why a parent sent theri kid their in the first place).

To read into this that shows where their priority is a wrong assumption, IMO. Of course schools are concerned with what children wear to school (they should be . . . do you want kids wearing half shirts, bikinis, or ones with political messages or how about a shirt that says teachers are dumb ), but I doubt that is any school's priority. What I would be glad about is that the school was willing to look at the dress code and make an exception in this situation. But if you have a problem with the rule or the way they handled it, just don't send your kid to that school.

This idea that schools are too prohibited . . . man you should see what kids are doing on campus these days. Here in Beaverton (supposedly good schools), with Highland Middle School the biggest complaint I hear is kids at such a young age (11-14) are completely out of control and the school does nothing about it. 3 parents this year took their kids out of the school and decided to home school them because the school does not pay attention or protect their kids.

If you don't like a charter school, you can always send your child to a religious based school:

Nate: your imaginary children will be fine. Kids are actually pretty tough, they aren't destroyed by petty rulemaking. If they were, then the human race would have died out, because to a kid, every rule is arbitrary.

Fuck it then, just close every school. We had bad behavior when I went to school but for the most part things were fine. The stupid ass no tolerance rules I read about are insane, we would have rebelled.

I truly can't imagine what it must be like when you suspend a kid for playing cops and robbers at school and pointing his finger as if it were a gun.

Oh I know, but that's not as entertaining =[ Much like hating on specific schools is more entertaining than hating on the news media trumping up stories of a one or two day suspension.

This. Charter schools, which are technically public schools (as Papa made pretty clear several times), are not your "typical" public school. Lumping them in with general public schools doesn't generally make a lot of sense, which is why people jumped on NB3 for his initial comment referring to public schools when his article was talking about a charter school.

It ain't easy to see why the uproar. But it also ain't easy to see a few posters made themselves look like fools with their responses as well.

I pity the foo'.
 
Meh. I think there needs to be more strict rules for schools and I absolutely agree that every single school (pub, priv, charter, what the fuck ever) should have uniforms. Children are there to LEARN, not "express" yourself. Go do after school programs if you want to have your kid to express themselves with others. We spend so much god damn time trying to make a school into what it's not just so we can appease everyone and all it does is cause problems. Go hang out near Reynolds or Benson at lunch time. You'll see.

Get back to the roots. Keep it about learning.... and let's not start up about sports & schools.....
