What to do with Nurkic?

And if you go by this year's salaries:

Nurk - 93rd highest paid
Ant - 57th highest paid
Grant - 62nd highest paid
Dame- 6th highest paid.

This continued notion that Nurk is overpaid is really frustrating to read over and over again. It's like people don't realize the MLE is close to 12 mil/yr these days and the cap spike is only going to make all of these contracts seem more reasonable in a few years.

Nurk is overpaid

couldn't resist

He's also going to need to adapt to playing with Grant - he hasn't had a big wing that can create offense playing next to him.

I like Grant a lot but I am not ready to say he can "create offense". He can shoot the 3ball and he can cut and finish well (and make his free throws) but I do not want Grant to think he is a facilitator. He is average for a PF at putting the ball on the floor. Although he is way better at it than the other PF starters we have had at that position. (I cringed when Amino would try)

against a slow big he should be fine. if the matchup aint there he should sit some, like last night. No he wont be an all star but it is what it is.

Agreed, we need two types of centers because they will need his size against some.

He looked good finishing at the end of last year. He just misses so many easy shots at the rim. As I said last night he just needs to not force things, and not fall to the floor every time he drives. That just can't possibly help with his accuracy. If he made 3 of those 4 drives where he fell to the ground, he would have been 6-9. I will take that. (and one less moving screen a night)

Nurk is who he is. Adjust your expectations if you think he's gonna be an all star. He will have nights when he misses shots he rushes; he will have others when he makes everything.

And he's not overpaid. He's getting paid what an average center gets paid.

Someone had this thought that I really liked, but we can potentially move him and Hart in January for DeAndre Ayton. I would explore that possibility. Love J Hart but it doesn't make sense to extend him longterm with Sharpe earning rotational minutes and GP2 already locked in.
I’d rather trade Hart for a backup C and a 1st than to trade Hart along with 1sts for Ayton if I’m being honest.

Like you said, Nurk is who he is, and I’m fine with that. I also don’t think there are many C’s that would be considered a major upgrade from Nurk. Turner isn’t an upgrade imo, Ayton makes $30+m/yr, both would require 1sts.

I would see how Kel’el Ware or Dereck Lively play throughout the season and find a way to draft one of them in the next draft and get a backup C.

We won. Not gonna panic over a player having a bad night. If this becomes a pattern, then ok.
Tell that to the people on here freaking out over one good game by Sharpe. I'm going to wait until it becomes a pattern.

Imagine how Luka or other superstars are gonna cook him. He's gonna be unplayable in big games

Nurk is fine. He's making the going rate for centers of his caliber.
Vucevic -- 22 mil
Capela -- 18 mil
Turner -- 18 mil
Adams -- 17 mil
Robinson -- 17 mil
Nurk-- 15.6 mil
Valanciunas -- 15 mil
Carter Jr. -- 14 mil
Br. Lopez -- 14 mil
Holmes -- 11 mil
Powell -- 11 mil
R. Williams -- 11 mil
Bamba -- 10 mil
Zubac -- 10 mil

There are 13 centers making more $ than Nurk this year. His salary is commensurate with production.

What to do with Nurk?

Long term answer: trade him. He’s not the answer to take us to the next level.

Short term answer: nothing.

It’s one game. We don’t even know if this team is great defensively for sure yet. Is it worth adding assets to upgrade if we are the 9-10th seed?

There are things we can do to get a backup C. You could eventually do a 3 way deal where we trade Hart and get a minimum of Vanderbilt and a 1st, then draft Lively or Ware in the draft, then have a rotation of Nurkic/Lively/Vanderbilt/Watford at C heading into next season. I’m definitely not adding assets to get rid of Nurkic though. I had no expectations of winning a championship this year.

Nurk’s salary isn’t a big problem to me. All of the C’s who are definitively better than Nurk are the ones a team just doesn’t get rid of like Jokic, Embiid, KAT. Then there are guys like Allen, Adebayo, and Gobert who are a tier below offensively. Ayton and Sabonis are in there somewhere, but they’re not even in the Allen/Adebayo/Gobert tier imo.

If you want that kind of upgrade from Nurk, you got to draft those guys.

Wow that's great info on salary inflation. I stand corrected!

Why are you down on Sharpe? I mean I get you kind of have a general negative tint to your posts past few years, but you seem to really focus on saying Sharpe won't be good. He clearly is already good and will only get better.

Not worried. He's very talented. If he can stay healthy he's gonna be fine. Lots of new pieces and he had a couple of flashes early.

Not down on him at all. I have realistic expectations for a kid out of HS. You should be asking these people on here why their expectations are so astronomical for a kid out of HS. I did get a chance to meet him yesterday. Seems like a shy quiet good dude. Definitely rooting for him.
just when he goes 5-22 over the next two games I won’t be the one freaking out.

Fair and reasonable. I think you're on the wrong board FAMS!

I'm going to say it again, the kid is the truth. I don't want him starting yet but I definitely think he needs to get a few more shots when he is in. Dude holds his own on defense and the points he scored weren't accidents. His shot is pure and he's the best slasher we have on this team. He explodes to the hoop, accepts any contact and tries to finish strong every time and his finishing skills are for real.

You wait to ordain the kid our sixth man or starting SF until he shows consistency but there is no doubt about it, the mystery has been solved, they young guy can play at this level and do so effectively.

It's pretty obvious this team needs a good center to maximize it's two best offensive players. The center doesn't need to be amazing, just be good at center things: guarding around the basket, finishing easy buckets, running in transition. Nurkic is not that guy. What do we do with Nurk given his contract? Does anyone even want him?
Stop it.

I can tell you that either of these next two games or whenever he has 3 points on 1-9 shooting I will NOT be the one who is down on him. I’d expect more games like that than the one he had against the kings last night. Just not as ready to send him to the HOF guide yet like some around here.

It's more about being realistic given the circumstances. How will he adjust when the playbook on him is out? That's what I'm waiting for (and then some) before saying he's arrived.
