What veteran Center can we bring that protects the rim?

I'd love a Steven Adams as a Blazer with Nurk...couple of huge guys to lean on skinny rookies in the paint and wear them out. You need two guys to bang with the Jokic's and Embiid'sof the world.
The Griz want to contend. They are not getting rid of him, imho.

by the way, Eubanks had better rim protection stats than Nurkic. he allowed 59% of FG's, 6ft<; Nurkic allowed 61.6%. Eubanks also blocked 3.1 shots/100-possessions while Nurkic blocked 1.5. But Nurkic has become floor-bound since his injuries

this website rim protection stats are revealing. It's kind of wonky and you have to play with the criteria on the left to see a lot of players ranked:

https://craftednba.com/player-traits/rim-defense

it shows the same thing that NBA.com does and that's Portland's best rim protector was Eubanks who ranked 87th among all players

Basketball reference also shows his DBPM to be higher than Nurkic's last year (in 200 more minutes, to be fair).

I do not for one minute believe that Eubanks is a better defender than Nurkic, but he is about the same given the system Chauncy plays. Sad, but true.

Don't forget we still have both Watford and Winslow, our defense at PF is Solid. Also Grant is not a bad defender either.
Our center rotation tough is currently what? Nurkic and Eubanks? One is too fat to get of the floor and one is constantly flying around, getting a few blocks but giving us a dismal defensive presence.
Someone like Taj Gibson at Center would stabilize our entire defense while giving us good interior defense alongside Watford/winslow
It's not that Nurkic is bad (I think he'll be great with more movement players), it's that we know he's going to be out a number of games. The backup becomes the starter and the 3rd string becomes the backup.
Cronin needs to plan for that.

Nurk can be a really good player when he wants to be.

Nurk's issue is his health and motivation. If he could stay healthy and if he actually had some drive, he could be an All-Star.

Nurkic made Walker Kessler look like the rookie he is, one game after Kessler had stiffed Domantas Sabonis.
That's the value of Nurkic. There are still other big men in the NBA to contend with, whose size for smaller forward/centers can be a big problem.

I have read this before and wonder if his "poor" defense against centers clouds our judgment. He is not a center but was needed there. I wonder how much better he would look alongside a rim protector. Hell, I am not even sure he played alongside Nurk more than a handful of games. The bottom line is although he has not shown to be a good defender I am not sold that he can't be against most PFs.
It was was only one game, but the lineup of Dame / Sharpe / Thybulle / Watford / Nurkic looked great in their win in Utah.

Utah had beaten Sacramento the game before, so both teams were still trying to win at that point.
That was the last game before the Blazer tank rolled in.

NO -- anyone who says were good at PF cause of Wat and Justise are just wrong cause if this was true would the Blazers have drafted a PF with the 2nd of our 1st round picks -- NO. Wat as of now is a 10th to 12th man type and Justise my guess is he will not even be ready to play til the new year to all star break similar to GP2 he is really messed up on the injury side of things. I will need to look over the FA pool of PF / C and such but all I know is if the Blazer go out and sign another guard 6'4 and under then this team really is screwed.
If Grant is back, the Blazers will have Grant,
Murray, Rupert, Watford, Walker, who can play PF.

Nurkic is floor-bound compared to Eubanks, so it's understandable why Eubanks is a better rim-protector and shot blocker. Nurkic has more mass and I think defends the paint better, which may be more important than pure rim protection. Eubanks appears to have more mobility and probably defends the perimeter better

Nurkic/Eubanks as a C rotation kind of illustrates Portland's overall talent deficit

As far as Dwight Howard is concerned? I kind of agree with Shaq. You have to be able to lead a team and in doing that there is no way his team in Taiwan should have been losing games. Pretty bad look for Howard to say the least?

Is someone actually suggesting Howard to sign for next season? The guy was a hobbled version of himself 10 years ago. Might as well lobby to sign Hakeem or some other 90s center.

This proves how difficult defensive stats are to capture more than it proves Eubanks is a better defender than Nurk.

Mason Plumlee. He'd be a great backup.

Mason will turn 34 during next season and his game was very reliant on athleticism. He was never big enough to really bang with centers and not skilled enough to go on the perimeter. I'm fine giving him a vet minimum deal if we're trying to win with Dame but otherwise I'd go with someone younger.

Nurk can be a really good player when he wants to be.

You are absolutely right. My problem is I'm tired of this being the case. Good players are good because they want to be good. Nurk IMO is not a good player because we have to wait for him to want to be good.
The constant nagging at the refs and complaining about fouls. The sulking when he doesn't get a call. The bad attitude when he doesn't get his way. It rubs off on everyone out there. Nurk gets caught laying on the floor way too often when he needs to get back on defense. Go watch any playoff game. Players figured it out quick they better get up and move because that ticky tack call isn't coming and the other team will smoke you if you stand there jawing at the refs.

with Jah out 25 games and Brooks gone I think they'll consider tanking looking at the competition they have to plough through in the West. A lot closer to New Zealand from Portland than from Memphis.

That dude in the blue hawaiian shirt is lined up with the wall in just a way that I thought it was two different pictures and I was thinking "Nate, why did you even put that second picture in? Am I supposed to know this guy?"

They are not tanking. They got Marcus Smart to keep them afloat when Ja is out.
I have doubts about that but you may be right..we'll see. Smart is a good pickup but I don't think they are going to be deep ..
