Free Agent What we aren't doing

Loading up on ping pong balls.

You know what? If that be the case, so be it. Trying to win by luring free agents to Portland like it seemed Olshey was attempting is extremely risky, because Portland just isn't the destination a lot of these players dream about. Teams like the Blazers typically are going to have to build through the draft or by making smart, low-cost acquisitions.

The Blazers have one star in Lillard and a player with star upside in Vonleh. If they wind up with a high lottery pick next year and make the right selection, they could have their three stars and wind up better off.

Can't remember which thread I started this thought, but min-value acquisitions to be had (like Ed Davis and Aminu last year) this year could include Jimmer, and screaming-from-the-mountaintops-when-traded-for-RoLo-as-a-toss-in Jeff Withey, Mike Muscala and James Michael MacAdoo. All UFAs

Davis, Aminu, Henderson, Plumlee....all guys who would be useful as supplements to Dame, LMA, and a healthy Wes.

Honestly, I think Ole' is still on plan "A". It is just the rest of reality that has moved on.

no, I had them in the spreadsheet already. I updated the number in the Cap Space sticky, but basically we have 11 players under contract for about 40.2M in salary.
henderson 6000000
kaman 5016000
lillard 4236287
leonard 3075880
vonleh 2637720
mccollum 2525160
plumlee 1415520
crabbe 947276
frazier 845069
aminu 7012000
davis 6000000
caphold12 525093

FYI, Aminu should be 7025761 (30/4.27) and Davis should be 6379585 (20/3.135).

Yeah remember when the Hawks signed Millsap, Korver, Carroll, and Teague all on cheap contracts? They first struck out on the top free agents. That would be the ideal model.

The difference is all of those players were good ours not so much

They are good now... but they weren't viewed that way at the time. Back then Millsap wasn't considered a starter on most teams; Korver had been let go from both Utah and Chicago, and Teague only got one offer for $8 million in free agency.

The team can give them raises or declining amounts from year to year of 4.5%. The contracts usually aren't the same for each season.

I also think it's interesting that we've paid 50M to guys who were on minimum contracts last year. It seems that if NO knew that Aminu was going to be good he could've picked him up for literally a veteran minimum exception last year with no impact on cap space. Who's this year's model? Jimmer? Mike Muscala?

Thats true but at the same time there have been Wesley Matthews level players available for value deals one year after the minimum that still end up being steals.

Actually, the 4.5% raises are only based on the first year value, hence the divisors I listed of 3.135 and 4.27. For a four-year contract with standard escalators, the annual salaries are Y1, Y1*1.045, Y1*1.09, and Y1*1.135. Therefore, the total value of the contract is Y1*4.27. So if a 4 year deal is worth 30M, you divide the 30M by 4.27 to get the first year value, and then apply the 4.5% escalators for the subsequent years.

You wouldn't need that cap hold since Rolo, LMA brings it to 13.

We could cut Frazier and or Crabbe.

Cap is also not finalized and last projections at $69 million. Perhaps it'll be higher.

We could always stretch or trade either Henderson or Kaman.

The tough part is getting LMA to agree to come back; not making the cap work.

Hats off to Olshey for not panicking and hitting those ground singles during this process. Curious to see what he does with our cap space?

Assimilate high-value contracts of good players, scrap for .500 for a year and then trade for a disgruntled B-list star. It is the Blazer way
