I think we should keep the military in Portland separate from this thread. I hope the military in Portland is a very brief chapter in the city I call home's history.

I TOTALLY disagree. They are headed this way simply because those in here continually bashing this city have the same state of mind as Trump! It’s complete horeshit. Portland is no worse than any other major city. They all have their problems. And these motherfuckers come on here daily after going out of their way to Google random shit to try to prove how horrible it is here…… well here you go. Sadly the loudest cries have come from those WHO DONT EVEN LIVE HERE! Well, It worked. Sit back and enjoy the show. I’ve never in my life been embarrassed and ashamed to be an American and a veteran. Local people didn't do this. Just like local people in Washington DC and Memphis didn't cause it in their cities. It's okay for people who live in and around Portland to criticize Portland. But that criticism isn't what is creating the false narrative about Democrat majority cities.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland liberal arts college is rebranding after community members determined they should do away with their original mascot.

On Friday, Lewis & Clark College announced that its community will now be known as the river otters. The private school was previously known as the Pioneers — or Pios, for short. But a survey conducted in early 2024 found that just 18% of current students believed the original mascot was appropriate, thus launching the search for a new mascot.

They should have surveyed alumni as well, dont agree with current students only, calling shots.

They did survey alumni. I know some people who receive the letter a year or two ago that they were considering it and asking for their feedback.

It sounds like 16% of current students voted for the name. And unfortunately, a lot of the students at Lewis and Clark are no longer locals.

I'm not super excited about this. Kind of disappointed actually... However, my daughter voted for the freaking river otters and is super excited that it won. Though she also preferred to stay Pioneers.

Some of the options were...
Cascades
Lynx
River Hawks
River Otters

I like Lynx better, but it's already taken by the WNBA team... In theory I like riverhawks better but then you would just be called the Hawks...

I don't know... Should have just stayed Pioneers, in my opinion.

My son’s best friend plays football for L&C! He was saying the team didn’t really like the new name! I love it!

WTF is a river otter???? And what does it have to do with Portland.....or a school named after two of the most famous explorers in American (and even more importantly, Oregon) history??? Do these kids even get an education anymore? Sounds like a complete lack of pride in their school (and regional history) all for the sake of a cuddly little rodent. Go Otters! Perfect rival for the OIT Owls.....but then, I'm a Boomer, so what does anyone expect?
 
Lewis and Clark went to establish a River Outter killing/fur export company. Maybe they should change the name of the School, Bet PEDA would agree with that and others. Not me however.

What's his name? WBB and football were partner teams last season so they hung out all the time.
