The Shining was actually filmed in Colorado. The shot of Timberline were the only scenes in Oregon.

I'd have to go with The Goonies, Animal House, or The Ring. They all are great movies in their genre, IMO.

EDIT - I didn't know Stand By Me was filmed in Oregon. Add that classic to the list.

I'm gonna second that. Not only was it filmed here, it was about here. That counts at least double as far as I'm concerned.

Sometimes a Great Notion is one of two films I've ever immediately rewatched. I enjoyed many of the other films listed here, but only Stand by Me and Drugstore Cowboy even approaches the Oregon feel that this great film has... the book rocks too

I'm embarrassed to admit I had never heard of "Sometimes a Great Notion". I'll have to check it out.
 
Any of you seen Paranoid Park - written and directed by Gus Van Sant?

Sometimes a Great Notion is a great film and book. Cuckoo's Nest is the best film shot in Oregon, IMO. Two really great Ken Kesey books. I've never really liked anything else he wrote.

My Own Private Idaho, much to my chagrin, wasn't filmed in Idaho. Almost entirely in Oregon. Fuckers.

Disagree. The book was great, one of my all time favorites and better than Cuckoo's Nest. However, the movie was extremely disapppointing. They had a potentially great cast (Paul Newman and Henry Fonda), but they toned things down to make the movie more "mainstream" and it really lost it's edge.

I pretty much agree, although I'd rate the Notion movie better than extremely disappointing. It certainly doesn't hold a candle to the book, though.

Extremely disappointing compared to the book. Anyone who hasn't read the book may not think the movie is that bad. The book is one of the best I've read. The movie is mediocre at best. They really tamed things down - especially the affair between Hank and his step mother. They changed their ages in the movie (Hank was 14 at the time in the book) to make the relationship acceptable in a PG rated movie. There was also another key visual image that was left out of the movie, which serves as both the introduction and climax in the book.

As a result, I thought the movie had a completely different feel than the book.

I thought Animal House was filmed at Western Oregon State (wherever that is). My dad preaches it like the Gospel whenever it comes on the TV.

"Oh, Animal House. You know that was filmed at a little place called Western Oregon State, right?" Funny thing is: he didn't go to college until he was almost 50. I don't get it.

EDIT: After looking up Wiki, looks like you're right and Dad's wrong. Not the first time. :)

A terrible movie filmed in Oregon: Kevin Costner's The Postman.

An awesome Oregon movie: Rooster Cogburn. John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn and a raft of dynamite!

The film was shot in Deschutes County, Oregon west of the town of Bend (for the mountain scenes), and on the Rogue River in the counties of Josephine and Curry, west of the town of Grants Pass (for the river scenes). Smith Rock State Park was a setting as well; the Rockhard/Smith Rock Climbing Guides building at the park entrance was originally built as a set for the movie, where it was portrayed as "Kate's Saloon".
