It's all arbitrary but every society sets some standards or laws. What about monkey? Elephant? Dolphin? Human? They have all been eaten by some cultures at some point. Others societies try not to ever harm an insect or wear a leather belt.
Personally, I am torn because ethically I don't like the idea of eating pigs because they are so intelligent, but conversely, bacon and pork ribs are amazing. I have been offered dog before on my travels and politely said no.
One of the real amazing things coming down the pike are Lab-Grown meats. currently Memphis Meats and other companies have been getting great results with lab grown meats that will be ground up, like meatballs, but correctly growing steaks or chic wings is still a few years away. But the research is amazing for a few reasons. 1) It will eventually be much cheaper and easier to mass produce so feeding the world will become less daunting. 2) The production of lab meat uses only 2% of the energy that it would take to produce farmed meat, greatly reducing energy consumption, cattle emissions and grazing runoff and erosion. 3) Once they have dialed in the ability to perfectly produce a beautifully marbled New York Strip, we will have the option of selecting more healthy fats and omega 3's . We will be able to dial in the steak for texture, taste, health or any mix of those.
