It's a reasonable question, for those of us who fly a lot.
However, it is a matter of personal preferences. I don't care for the all-in-one bags Xericx likes, because I want to have some stuff with me in the seat, but not so much that it impedes my footspace. Therefore, I have a small suitcase for clothes and so on, and a briefcase for laptop and reading material and ipod and so on. I stick the suitcase in the overhead and keep the briefcase with me.

Yeah, the only plight I have is fighting for overhead space now with the stricter rules on check-ins. My bag usually doesn't fit lengthwise in the overhead compartments.
