Defensively, Leonard took big steps forward as a rim-protecting center. According to SportVU data made publicly available by the NBA last year, he held opponents within 5 feet of the rim to 42.3 percent shooting, making him one of the best paint defenders in the league. That percentage was lower than the rates allowed by Roy Hibbert (42.6 percent), Dwight Howard (45.7), Andre Drummond (48.0) or DeAndre Jordan (48.5). No, I am not kidding.

I know this was only on 15 min/game, but that's a pretty good number. Maybe he doesn't get the "d" back yet, but it seems like there is good reason to believe even MM will give him full letters soon.

Mayers is going to explode in beast mode next year! he will have the power of 10 raging demons!

His steady improvement in holding his position and going straight up on defense was obvious to anyone who was actually paying attention and not just trashing the guy becuase it was the fashionable thing to do. Same with his improved rebounding the season before last. There were so many posters here personally invested in labeling him a bust, they were blinded to his improvement - at least until the Memphis series. Although that was a bit of a coming out party for Leonard, the steady progress and hard work was there all along.

I'm really anxious to see what he can do with more minutes. Will he get tired out and see his efficiency drop, or will the increased game time give him better rhythm?

I agree that he looked much better holding his position--which was likely the main reason for his good numbers. He really isn't a great shot blocker, but if he holds his position he is 7'1".

I thought he got it back in the Memphis series, personally. His work against a Marc Gasol gunning to test him in the post was pretty damn good, given the circumstances.

His 14.8 PER almost make him an average NBA player.

Not bad for a 22-year old most had been writing off as a total bust for the better part of 3 years.

What was his PER in the playoffs? Oh, that's right, it was 19.6 - borderline all-star - while going head-to-head with the former DPOY and one of the best 2-way centers in the game.

We really don't know which one he will be until he starts getting 30 minutes. He is trending in a good direction though. I just hope his new wife doesn't derail him. (joking, sort of)

I love that you think your opinion hold any weight with in the slightest.

Must be hurricane season. There is a powerful scent of salt and snark in the air. :devilwink:

His new wife will help him turn into a beast just by giving him that PREGAME.

He was our best defensive big against Memphis.

He really did check Marc better than either RoLo or LMA.

When I saw the thread title I thought this was about Lillar_.

This is why we need to keep Kaman. He can work with Vonleh and Meyers.

Yea, i also joined "Kaman Island".
Kaman is kind of a goofball+oddball but he got a ton of moves in the paint,he knows how to use his body well and he is a former all star who wants to be in Portland.

I believe he owns stocks in Mayers development last year and i believe he acted as a positive influence thus far.
Lets just keep him instead of getting a crappy 2nd rounder for him.

Even though Lopez regressed from '13-14?

You think Kaman was tutoring Rolo? Rolo was on the team prior to Kaman. you know this right? Rolo was already our starting center when Kaman came. You know this right? Pretty tough for one bench vet to tutor a starting vet, dont ya think?
Rolo was supposed to have his own game...and he did. For a while.
