I had posted in another thread about the so-called head coaching carousel.....head coaches being fired or leave one NBA team, then end up with another...and so on.

It made me wonder, which current head coach has been with the most teams (as a head coach)? 2nd? 3rd?

Anyone know?

Thanks

The following are all currently head coach their 5th NBA team:

Rick Adelman
George Karl
Paul Silas

Two relatively successful coaches out of those three.

I'm wondering when Reggie Theus will get another head coaching gig, if the retread rule actually exists.

I can name Adelman's in order: Portland, Golden State, Sacramento, Houston, Minnesota. What do I win?

Silas has only been with 4 teams.

You are correct. I accidentally counted the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Hornets as two teams. A bit of a coincidence that Silas has coached both the Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats.

His predecessor with the Bobcats, Next Town Larry Brown has coached nine different NBA teams, plus the Denver Nuggets when they were still in the ABA, along with the Carolina Cougars. Is Brown's nine a record for most different NBA teams coached? I can't think of anyone else, off the top of my head, that even comes close. Even someone like Don Nelson, who coached forever an seemed well traveled, only coached four different NBA teams (including the Warriors twice). Lenny Wilkens, whose head coaching career spanned 35 years coached 6 different teams (including Seattle twice). I can't think of anyone else that coached more than six different NBA teams.

Cotton Fitzsimmons, Dick Motta and Kevin Loughery all coached 6 teams. I don't think anyone's coached 7.

I believe Fitzsimmons only coached 5. Didn't he start and finish with the Suns? I also believe Motta only coached 5 NBA teams, but coached the Mavs two different times.

Loughery coached the Nets in both the ABA and NBA. So, that still gives him "only" six different teams. If you count the ABA, Larry Brown moves to 10 teams coached.

Larry Brown coached 9 NBA teams, and also coached Carolina in the CBA. I'm still hoping the Maloofs convince him to make it 10, just for the potential trainwreck.

Boob already mentioned Brown, I was thinking of guys other than Brown that coached 7, or more.

Quiz: Which current NBA teams did NOT have any of the coaches mentioned in this thread? Not including Theus or Iavaroni--they were mentioned as jokes. I don't know the answer.

I used to like Bill Fitch, but I count only 5 teams for him unless my memory's off. He and Motta were the greatest coaches of centers I know of, other than Auerbach and Wooden.

Okay, my quiz question doesn't include the new names I mentioned here! I may have screwed up my question.
