Simple question. Simple answer? What say you?

I'm not answering this until we know Brogdan and Ant are both here on opening night...
Hey, the forward-looking aspect of this is half the fun. Obviously, this question is predicated on the roster remaining as-is for the next few weeks at least. C'mon--play along!!

Pretty obvious its going to be Scoot/Ant IMO.

Be very shocked if its anything else.
I'll be a contrarian and go with Brogdon/Ant. I could see Chauncey wanting to have an experienced lineup from the beginning, and then move Scoot and/or Sharpe into starting roles as the season progresses.

Do you guys really think we wouldn't start Scoot? Having Brogdon in front of him would be such a dumb idea in the grand scheme of things. Not only would it be a missed developmental opportunity in a year when we don't really care about winning, but it would indicate a team without a direction.

@maxiep @PtldPlatypus

I think Scoot/Ant is a foregone conclusion; didn't even realize there was going to be a debate.

Yeah I guess if Brogdon is still here on opening night it could be more of a possibility than my original comment.... Just hard for me to wrap my head around Brogdon playing for us.

I suspect they're not going to play Brogdon that much. I don't buy that they actually think he's part of the future. Maybe if they think they're trading Simons. But I think they will play Brogdon enough to show he's healthy and then try to hold onto him until December or January when a lot of guys become available.

I'd assume Brogdon starting would just be a 10-20 game thing until he's traded in December or Scoot "earns" the starting spot. Yeah would be odd - been so expecting a Scoot-Ant starting duo.

if Portland was going to start their best guards, at the time, it would be Brogdon/Ant. But the Blazers didn't draft Scoot, then trade Dame, to start with Scoot on the bench

Brogdon came off the bench all last season so he may be OK with it. But he'll probably be the best guard Portland has in October so maybe it might cause some friction.

Problem is that if Brogdon doesn't get consistent minutes of around 25/game it won't ease the worries other teams might have about his health

Eh, I think most teams know we're not keeping him. I think they understand that he's not part of our plans.

Thinking of this more... in media day a few hours ago Cronin mentioned how Scoot has been in Portland since the draft practicing everyday at the practice facility. Interacting with management and they're very pleased to have him out working all the time.

Seems unlikely they shove him to the bench for a few games just to give a temporary audition of Brogden. Especially since Brogden is the reigning 6th man of the year - can just say he we're leaving him in his successful role.

I see the Blazers re-signed Skylar Mays so I can only assume that he’s one of the dominant pairings.

Yeah if Brogdon is playing over 20mpg and looks like his normal self I don't think there will be additional health/medical concerns.

You could be right. I was just thinking about the pairings and how they all offer something different, and I figured it would be a question worth asking. Perhaps it's as foregone a conclusion as you presume...but maybe not?

I do. I think Brogdon is a pro, and there's value to learning how to play from him. I think if Brogdon stayed on the team (and I think he's gone before the trade deadline), Scoot would eventually replace him, but I think Malcolm starts.

I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

We don't give one damn about winning. This season is about development and figuring out what we have. I want Scoot being spoonfed 30+ mpg from Day 1.

The opportunity cost in wasting a developmental year to have Brogdon take his spot because of seniority is not something I would even entertain. If that is even a remote possibility, Cronin needs to dump Brogdon for a late second tomorrow.

No it’s not FAMS. Thats why we so many GOD DAMN useless threads on this forum lately! To answer your question……Ant will be a starter and the teams leading scorer and leader. I believe Scoot gets the start next to him to be honest. I think he and Shae will play pretty much the same amount of minutes though.

but the rumors about his injuries are out there. At least one trade died because of questions about his health. Most teams interested in him will know he's not in Portland's plans, but they won't really know how he reacts to consistent minutes until they see him play consistent minutes

I don't disagree with this desire. Given the choice I'd want to start Scoot/Sharpe for that very reason. But we are not Coach Billups. He may have a different view than we do.

There is a bit less clarity with Sharpe replacing Ant because of a few reasons:

- Ant is not yet a finished product and has shown he has a different gear when featured in a primary role. We need to see if this can be sustainable for longer than a quarter of a season.
- Shaedon can play the 3 and did for most of last year.
- Shaedon might be further behind in his development (and ability to contribute) than Scoot at this point, so having him get his 25-30 mpg off the bench is not a ridiculous notion.

I agree. So many theories about who will/should start and most of them are pointless. Joe is not going to tell Chauncey who to start based on when they were drafted. Chauncey is going to start whatever combination plays best in preseason. And that combo will change as players develop. (and as players get injured) It is no big deal who starts on day one, they will all get their chance at some point in the season.

I think they'll want to limit Brogdon's minutes and bringing him off the bench is the best way to do that.
I don't know if that's the case. Why couldn't he start but still get the Vonleh-esque 4-5 minutes at the beginning and end of each half, keeping his minutes in the 16-20 mpg range?

What's the advantage to that strategy in this case?

Why not play him the last 4 of the first and first 4 of the second, giving Scoot a balance rest in the middle?
