I have been thinking about this but can't decide which quality is more important for the Nets to get out of the starting SF spot. Which would work best for the Nets:

1) A SF like Mike Miller who can shoot it from distance and score in other ways but might not improve the defense.

OR

2) A defensive player like a Gerald Wallace who has a poor jump shot (but still can score in other ways)

Would it depend who's at PF and who's coming off the bench?

:dunno:

I think the type of player that would really help would be an Andres Nocioni/Walter Hermann type. A big guy you can have defend PF's when Yi is on the court but who can also play perimeter defense, kick out, and shoot the triple. Basically Eduardo Najera with a basketball IQ.

Isn't Hasskell like that already?

Hassell's only method of scoring is through his jumpshot, which is decent.

His defense doesn't compare to Wallace's.

I don't see the comparison here, sorry.

agreed. Linas Kleiza anyone?

The Nets problem this season has been mostly defense. The offense has been surprisingly alright because Harris has taken his game to another level. The offense is predicated on spreading the floor with shooters for Devin and Vince and letting them create or score. But the problem is if Vince or Devin are not having really good games its really tough for the Nets to get a win because their terrible defense doesn't keep them in a game when their offense stinks. Having another player who can create and score would help those nights Vince or Devin are off. But how much of a difference would a defensive SF make for the Nets overall defense? If it's someone like Gerald Wallace who has a shaky jump shot and is not really a threat from long distance, how would it effect the Nets offense of spreading the floor and letting Vince and Devin operate? But then again, someone like Wallace does bring other options of scoring by slashing, postups, fastbreak points. A guy like Mike Miller could work well in a dribble drive offense. He can put the ball on the floor, spot up and with range. He can create for others and he can run the break. He could give something on offense and maybe the Nets wouldn't be any worse on defense with him?

Or could the Nets live with Simmons if they upgrade at the 4 spot and move Yi to the bench or trade him? What kind of PF would work and could possibly be availabe?

I think an ideal line up would be to have a spot-up shooter/defender at the 3(A Shane Battier type player). An established star PF(A Brand or Gasol level player). And a 6th man who can create and score coming off the bench( A guy like John Salmons). Those 3 things would really push the Nets ahead in the East. It would be just up to Frank to get them to play defense.

Harris/Dooling
Carter/Salmons/CDR
Battier/Hayes
Brand/Anderson/Najera
Lopez/Boone

Sigh...

If all it takes is Stro, Sean, and the GS pick, do you do it? It hurts our 2010 chances, but helps us now immensely.

Even adding Wallaces 10 million salary in 2010 the Nets could still have cap room to be a player in free agency.

Carter - 17.5M
Harris - 8.4M
Yi - 3.37M
Lopez - 2.4M
Anderson - 1.4M
Boone - 3M (if they give him the qualifying offer)
CDR - .85M

Allocate maybe another 5 million for draft picks
total- 42M

+

Wallace - 10M

52M in 2010 contracts.

Could have about maybe 14-17 million to throw at a big time free agent? :dunno:

Maybe a better way could be try and target Caron Butler this season who will also make 10 million in 2010. He's better than Wallace. If Yi isn't looking like the real deal by 2010 then the Nets go for a star PF in 2010?

Harris/?
Carter/CDR
Butler/?
?/Anderson
Lopez/Yi

Caron would take a shitload. He's still 28. It would take expirings, the GS pick, good young talent, and either Dallas's first pick, or one of ours.

What about trying to go after James Posey?

He's an excellent role player. Defends and is a good spot-up shooter. What would the Hornets want for him?

Posey has two championship rings from the last three years. The Hornets are very aware of that. Don't expect them to want to trade him, so if they were going to, it would have to be for a player that could help them win even more. I doubt they'd trade him for a "future" player.
