An interesting question came up earlier today at work. Who do you respect from the political party on the other side of the your political spectrum?

I'll start it off. I am a liberal, at least on social issues, and more moderate on fiscal issues. So, basically I usually vote Dem.

I respect:
Romney
Rice

In fact, if that were a ticket, I would think hard about voting for them. Not sure I would end up in their corner, but at least I would seriously listen to all their stances and give them a fair shake.

why Romney over Huntsman, if I may ask?

To tell the truth, I dont know much about Huntsman (feel free to fill me in). But Romney seems to at least be intelligent and thoughtful in his responses. If I had to vote for someone who did not hold my beliefs, I would at least want to respect their ability to navigate complex issues. Too many players (on both sides) are not very intelligent, and I look at them and just think "puppet".

Honestly, until there is some massive lobbing reform, I don't think anyone is immune to being a puppet, but at least an intelligent person will know when they are leading, and when they are being led.

I choose Rice because I believe that she has true convictions and a fortitude that many politicians lack. I think that she will make decisions based on what she believes is right for the country. I may disagree with stances, but I trust her ethics.

Thanks for the answer. Could you choose one of them, and tell me why?

I'm hoping that if we can get enough people answering this, from all sides, we can start to get a picture of who the more trusted people are in politics.

Not sure I'd call Lieberman other side as much as an opportunist.

But I liked gordon smith when he was in politics

I saw Huntsman speak at the War College in January (while he was still the Ambassador to China). I still don't know a ton about the guy other than some articles here or there, b/c he's not getting the nomination, but in the rough cut he seems to be

My curiosity stemmed from: if Romney's religious preference and social conservatism weren't automatic "no's" for you ( , btw) as a socially liberal-trending voter, why you thought Romney's experience and ideas going forward made him a better candidate than Huntsman, who seems to be to be Romney with more and more recent real-world experience (especially in Far East policy).
