I answer yes to both . . . but will be much more skeptical in evaluating Obama next year when we have a year worth of presidential decisions to evaluate.

And if there ever is a day I'm not liking gov't . . . it's today. :sigh:

I love Obama. But I messed up and had them take out too much this year. I'm gettin some back! Taxes in the Pimpin' game are harsh!
 
Paying roughly ~$500 total between state/fed, which isn't bad considering we made a bit of interest on what we didn't have withheld. Also remember that Obama had nothing to do with today's payment other than he was a senator at the time.

well, actually I still "support" Obama but I don't agree with him on a lot of issues. So the "no" would not really be accurate but neither would a "yes".

$1200 total from both, but I'll be honest, we had quite a few "sketchy" write-offs on the rental property at the beach. I figure it's all good though since the value of that home has dropped $50,000 since last year.
 
Well, actually, this year's taxes are based on the Bush tax rate. Next year will be based on Obama rate and will go down for most of us.

I got a modest return from fed and state. Does not change my position.
 
I got quite a bit back, but that is only because I spent so much on real estate investments. Obama is trying to take that away though, don't worry. (lowering the income threshold at which you can declare a real estate loss).

Oh yeah... no I don't still support Obama. :)
 
Yes and no. I curse my decision to vote for a guy who invented our arcane tax system, destroyed our economy, racked up decades of massive debt, hurled us into two wars and a housing bubble, and gave me herpes. All in four months.

He's an evil, busy bastard. Damn him and his little dog Bo too.

Good points about this not being Obama's taxes . . . although in a way that scares me.

It was that damn AMT (alternative minimum tax) that nailed me. McDonalds anyone? Heck I would think about selling my palyoff tickets . . . but I just can imagine selling those when I have been waiting so long for playoff games.

But you are "rich" if you are buying playoff tickets. Obviously the government should be able to decide whether or not you are "rich" and how much is "enough".
 
The worst tax nailing I ever got was after I'd been out of work a long time, got 2 extensions on unemployment and just starting working less than a month before tax time. It was Reagan who first instituted federal income tax on unemployment compensation, (you know those taxing liberals!) which up to then had been tax free. Now you can have it taken out of your unemployment checks but not at first, so I owed on about 16 months of unemployment, no savings, and then got a penalty because I had so much due even though I was not late or anything. I had an uncle may he rest in peace who was a CPA and he was able to get the penalty lifted but I still was in hock a couple of thousand. I was paying off debts incurred during unempoyed time, just to pay basic bills, and then had to add a loan to pay off the taxes.

I don't mind paying the extra tax, but I sure hate the AMT forms. It almost doubles the complexity of the return.

Feds and Oregon will be sending us $700+ each, which is the silver lining for Bush almost destroying my livelyhood, and my wife battling and triumphing over a catastrophic illness all in the same year.

Either way, it's just money, and I'm looking forward to a fantastic summer with friends and family, and a Blazers Championship!

It must be MY fault that Bush not only created the largest Federal Deficit in history by borrowing from China and spent all of it on a War for Profit and NONE of the money on anything to improve our country in any way while alienating most of the world. :ohno:

But as I pointed out in the part you edited, I have adapted to the disaster he created and have a very positive outlook we will overcome the ill effects of his treasonous incompetence.

THAT is the typical American mindset these days. :cheers:

He's done no such thing.

Bush ran our country into the toilet by stealing our past, current, and future tax revenues (several decades worth) and handing it over to his buddies at Halliburton via Iraq. This is money that should have been and needed to be invested in our country's infrastructure, economy, education, and healthcare. All these things still need to be paid for, and now we have an 8 year backlog that needs to be caught up in addition. Whatever it costs to save us from Bush's treason/incompetence and restore this country to it's previous greatness is all on Bush.

Pretty much the same as if your accountant was supposed to pay your mortgage and business expenses but instead payed none of your bills and borrowed trillions in your name and skipped off to the Cayman Islands.

Was it the accountant you now hired to try and save you from ruin (Obama), or was it your thieving accountant (Bush) who did this?

So, let's recap. This thread is about taxes paid on income earned when George Bush was president, pursuant to tax rates established when George Bush was president (although with a Democratic congress for the last two years). The tax rates are historically low, and significantly lower than those in effect during every other major economic expansion that has occurred since WWII. [Incidentally, after his initial tax cuts, Ronald Regan spent the remainder of his presidency raising taxes.] Yet, because some of you have to pony up $85, it is somehow a referendum on Barak Obama. Got it.

For the record, I underpaid my taxes during the year and wrote a check for roughly $7,000. Is that a lot? Or is it
