Neptunes, Kanye, Timbo and Just Blaze - that is 4 of the very most influential producers of the moment, not only in hip-hop, but in pop music in general and of the last 5-8 years.
in 10 years they will definitely be considered among the most influential alltime.
after all, hip-hop is an extremely young art form so "alltime" isnt' really that long of a time....
DJ Premier has had a huge influence on tons of rappers, but in terms of what's on the charts, what you hear in clubs and what comes out of people's cars nowadays, Timbaland and Neptunes have way more reach.

To me, you posting that is kind of like saying you think hendrix, clapton, jimmy page and stevie ray vaughan are all "horrible" guitarists. I guess someone could have that "opinion" but it's a bit out there imo.
You would have to travel far and wide to find producers with as good an ear for a hook as those dudes. I used to work for a hip-hop manager and I listened to demo after demo of stuff that was nowhere near as guys as those. I don't think those guys are geniuses, but they're talented at what they do.

I see what you're saying...they are more popular on a mainstream level (which isn't bad), but soul sampling has been around way before Kanye...I mean RZA, Premo, Pete Rock, etc. were all doing soul samples before kanye came along, I think Kanye is a great producer, but I don't feel like his beats are neccessarily what I'd consider "ground breaking"...to be honest I can see your argument for the other 3 (blaze, timbo, and the Neptunes) more than Kanye.

yes it's young, but usually when you talk "influence" you talk about the pioneers that layed the ground, because they were there first...

It's like Dre and Quick influenced an entire coast....Premo, Marley Marl, Pete Rock. Bambaata, RZA, Havoc, etc. influenced an entire coast..

Do I like Kanye? Hell Yeah. Influential isn't exactly what I would call him though. And who cares if Dilla was sampling Daft Punk before Kanye...its not like that makes Kanye a bad producer...everybody can't be 100% original...but Dilla was never mainstream like Ye' is...Ye' is basically introducing it to the mainstream which is why he is getting a lot of credit for it.

9th wonder seems like a real intelligent brother, but his production lacks that "umph" to put him as one of the greats.....I have a boy who I feel is a better producer than 9th Wonder....

I just mean you'd have to listen to a LOT of demos to hear guys as good as Timbaland, the Neptunes or Just Blaze. In my experience, talented artists, even minorly talented, are few and far between. Out of every 100 musicians, struggling/unsigned or whatever, seems like only 2 or 3 actually have the ability to create anything original or good, at least on a level where it will travel and be liked by even a semi-sizeable group of people. So even the bands that are crap are still in that 2 or 3 out of 100, so I try not to be so critical of music that is mediocre. I'm listening to the Good Charlotte album right now at work (quietly), and it's okay, it's nothing ground-breaking or genius, it's pretty damn corporate but it's still in that top 2 or 3 per 100 CDs so I"m not going to say it's complete feces just cause it's not OK Computer...... know what i mean mayn??

You're not looking hard enough then. I seriously have a problem in which I have yet to listen to some of the music I've downloaded because of the vast majority of it. That said, even that music while some I haven't heard is hailed as groundbreaking and visionary by some of the smartest people in music.

As for your Good Charlotte reference, that's not my cup of tea. I try to explore and listen to music that is in fact groundbreaking and genius. I can't backtrack on something. If I've listened to an album like OK Computer, then it's hard to go back and listen to something that isn't up to that level in that genre.

I see where you're coming from, but it seems to me that we listen to music differently and that's why our opinions differ.
