Who's Better: Martell or Rudy?

I actually really like this bump.

A year ago it was Rudy EASILY. He just had a great rookie season, he needs more of a role, we could trade Roy for Paul and be even better!

Now, he's inconsistent, has trouble creating his own shot, misses Sergio, can get really hot, but isn't dependable, plays kind of poor defense but gets steals, and is undersized.


Webster a year ago was a player for the disabled list. We overpaid him with 4 mill/year, he has trouble creating his own shot, had questionable handles at best, has to be set up off of screens, was overrated for where he was drafted, can get really hot but isn't dependable, can play good defense sometimes, but most often isn't that great.

Webster now is a guy who is a really valuable hustle player who can knock down threes when he's open (some of the time). Even if he's not shooting well, he works his butt off on defense, and does some nice things on the boards every once in a while. He had a great month when our season was in question and averaged almost 20ppg. He's paid well for what he does, and can be a valuable player off of the bench.

I love lurking here and reading all the train wreck threads you guys make. But I really hate all the thread necromancy people do here. It's rediculous.

As for the original question, I think they both are capable of being solid role players on a good team. The major difference that I see is that Webs is able to accept that kind of supporting role, while Rudy clearly is not. Whether he ever will remains to be seen, but it sure seems like he would be happiest on either a D'Antoni style SSOL team, or back in Europe where he can be the hottest thing since sliced Spanish bread. I do think that he is a lot better than what we have seen recently, but I have been convinced that he is a poor fit for this team as it is now. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind hanging on to Webs as an energy bench player, provided he continues to be cool with that.

Gotta agree; though last year I probably would have voted Rudy and been wrong wrong wrong. Martell brings effort on defense, can rebound and block shots, and drains the three at a clip that isn't so much worse than Rudy to disregard the other things he brings to the table. Neither is a world-beater, but Martell's a solid backup player with a ton of heart.

Every year (save his lost season) Martell has improved his ORtg and DRtg; this year was the first where he wasn't upside-down on his ratings. It's encouraging to see Martell steadily improve, slowly but surely.

Juwan Howard is a better shooter than either one. Pritchard could replace them and Bayless with 3 mini-Howard old FAs and we'd be a lot better. The secret is, don't go onto the floor thinking, "I'm a shooter." Think of all your other roles and accept a tiny number of open shots as gravy.

How is Channnig Frye looking these days? If only Gentry would force him to get in the post like Nate did.....

BTW, I think Martell would be amuch better player on another team as well...You know a team that didn't ask him to sit out on the three point line 90% of the time....

Wait, I am confused. Are you saying that Channing belongs on the perimeter hoisting 3's, and he would have been successful here if we'd let him do that, but Martell should be allowed to leave the perimeter, instead of being forced to hoist nothing but 3's?

He was limited partially by the system, but largely by his own innate flaws

You mean to say you want to see Martell handling the ball or attempting to drive more? If he he were better at either than he is, that would be fine, but isn't so I'd rather he mostly focus on the one thing he seems half-way decent at.

Channing Frye is a mediocre player, but he is in a system (PHX) that utilizes him to the best of his abilities, and those abilities hurt POR during the playoff series...

In POR he couldn't get off the bench, in PHX he put up 29? on POR in a playoff game...but hey, keep telling yourself it has nothing to do with the coach or offensive philosophy here.....

Rudy's situation is no different IMO, and like I said, we can revisit this conversation when he is playing for another team next year....

As for Martell, I think he has developed a lot of areas of hs game, his defense has gotten better, needs to be more consistent, he has done a much better job putting the ball on the floor and driving to the rim, he rebounds and hustles....I think for him, a lot of it is a confidence issue, if he were on another team playing 25-30min a night and not worrying about being yanked out of the game for one bad play, then you might see a different\better player than you do on this team, under this offense....

I keep bringing up Rudy's tiny weight. That's why he can't get inside in the NBA, but he can in Europe. At his age it's late, but he could at least hit the weight room and try.
