Why don't they give assists on fouls?

It doesn't make sense to me. A player makes a good pass that in some cases would have led to points, but the receiving player is fouled and goes to the line. The passer gets no credit in the current system.

Why not give .5 assists per make?

So if the receiver steps to the line and sinks both shots, the passer gets 1 assist for his part in the play.

While we're at it, the big guy standing under the basket should get 0.5 rebounds for collecting a missed free throw.

I've always felt the same. Especially since they, I believe will credit a team with a fast break point if fouled on the break and they make a FT.

Jack Armstrong has advocated for this for years. Assist counts if the player makes all free throws (2 or 3 depending on the foul).

Ha, ha. Maybe they do. That might explain the ref who blocked the free throw attempt and the other one who was wrestling for the ball after the missed free throw. Something is going on with these guys.

How about cutting tip-in's down to 0.5 rebounds on the stat sheet?

Z'Bo's my guy, but he must get 1-3 rpg on tip-in's every game, and you can probably lump players like Dwight Howard into that boat as well.

The problem is that it's assumed the player would have made the basket. He may have missed or the shot blocked... so why give an assist when the outcome is never determined? I mean if that's the case why not give an assist on interior passes that are stolen.

It's not assuming that. What it is is awarding an assist for points created. They don't get it if the guy misses the FTs.

OK, got it.

That said, I still disagree. To me, if the assist does not directly lead to a basket made, no assist.
