It doesn't make sense to me. A player makes a good pass that in some cases would have led to points, but the receiving player is fouled and goes to the line. The passer gets no credit in the current system.
Why not give .5 assists per make?
So if the receiver steps to the line and sinks both shots, the passer gets 1 assist for his part in the play.
