Why is there a Black History Month but not a White History Month?

Of those you listed, only the Cosby show showed blacks in a non comical setting (in the sense they weren't caricatures).

Is it really that big of a deal that a network is called "black entertainment network"? I mean, us whites only had ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, PBS, TBS, Disney, Nickelodeon, MTV (in it's earliest incarnation), VH1, TNN, USA, and so on and so on and so on....

In the 50's and 60's you had Julia and Beluah. In 1950, only 10% of the population was black, and probably only about 15 black people in the nation had TVs. So what would be the sense in making a TV shows that target such a small % of the population? Political Correctness hadn't been invented back then.

If you're so worried about watching black people on TV, by all means, watch BET, order the collection of "Girlfriends" on DVD....

Wow, I didn't realize that Black History Month was such a hot-button issue. What harm is really coming from a symbolic appreciation for a minority group? It's a celebration that has largely become a joke for suburban white teenagers to toast 40's to anyway.

Does it really bug ya'll that much that we take the time to acknowledge those that overcame and endured the torment of a government that vilified them based on their skin tone? That was a dark era in American history, and it wasn't that long ago. How some of you feel that Bill Cosby having a TV show somehow means that we should completely forget the struggles that the government and majority of the population forced upon the African American population is beyond me.

In terms of racial holidays though, I find the way that MLK Day is evolving to be increasingly disturbing. My grandfather was a civil rights leader from Missouri who worked closely with MLK and several other prominent civil rights activists, but the MLK Day holiday should not be about a single man but rather a movement. Our nation sees MLK Day as a day to remember MLK first and remember the movement secondarily. MLK has become deified by the media, as if he's to black people what Jesus is to Christians, and that's honestly a nauseating concept.

Hawaii, New Mexico, California, Texas, and D.C. have a higher population of "minorities" than white people, and eventually, though not in any of our lifetimes, this will be the case throughout the United States. There weren't a lot of them, but quite a few more than you imply.

I Spy was a pretty good show co-starring Bill Cosby. The Sammy Davis Jr. show. Mission Impossible, The Outcasts, Room 222, Rawhide for a few episodes and Star Trek are few others I remember watching.

Sydney Poitier was a legit star in the early sixties.
