I believe the NW is due for an El Nino winter, which means warmer and drier than normal iirc.

the wind howled from the top of mount centipede, whistling through the barren and dead forest in the canyon where we once lived. the sun but a distant memory we talk tales of at the campstove, our fur keeps us warm now, but once, there was a star that shone so bright you could almost touch it.

"dad, what was sunlight like?" little arcfang wondered

stahn replied "well son, do you know what this is? this bitter cold? this biting wind, this ever present deadening darkness? imagine the exact opposite."

"all i have ever known is this father, all i have ever known is this cold, this darkness"

"well thank the stars that you never felt the warmth of the sun, felt it sting your body on a cold day. thank the stars you have never had the pleasure of feeling the sun dry away your sweat in the fields, as many a man have ended their lives in the glooming pit after coming to the bitter realization that they will never feel it again" said stahn
