OT Will Portland Become A War Zone This Weekend?

Welcome to our community

Now you're getting it!

Yeah, I get it. You want to use the fact that they are trolling to excuse their behavior.

Everything can be excused as just trolling.

Nazis were just trolling their enemies by wearing swastikas. We were just trolling when we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.

I'm just trolling you with this post, just as you were just trolling me with yours.

Words and symbols have no meaning. They exist only if you react to them.

Even the physical world is just god trolling you, putting mountains or oceans in your way to see how you react.

Or... maybe you are just making excuses for neo-nazis.

Well you know, the OK sign was started by one of the astronauts that went to the moon

No, the astronauts did not invent the OK sign. It's much older than that.

This kind of hyperbole is exactly what I'm talking about.

This is why the current fascist groups are doing so well. They are very very smart. Everything they do can be called "trolling" or just a silly internet meme. It is like instant plausible deniability for anything they do. It is planned that way for a reason.

I mean no disrespect, and I awknowledge and agree with many of your points. I dislike Trump a lot, so dont take this as a defense of him. I think Trump’s “figure-head” as some Far Right racist gets kind of over played. This country was no less Racist 20 years ago then it is today.

Just my opinion, but I hear he’s “emboldened”, racists and all that and maybe to some extent thats true, but I just think that many people now have a “figure” they can point too. For years it was the KKK, and Hitler, or Stalin, etc, when we have “one” guy to blame, it seems like it’s easier for people to rationalize and gives them a name to attach to their feelings.

It seems to me, that Trump is at the point with many people that literally everything he says, someone will say oh it’s racism, or homophobic, or whatever. I think just as much as he’s created a target for his back, there are those who have played into that and its like just the fact he said something will make them mad.

Edit: I think politicians have been making racists feel at home for far too long, and it has happened for years long before Trump.

Check it out: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2019/08/14/trump-and-racism-what-do-the-data-say/

Here are some things Trumps has said (aided by the internet):

-He called Haiti, El Salvador and African nations "shithole countries" and said all Haitians "have AIDS" and that once Nigerians saw the US they would never "go back to their huts."

-"...laziness is a trait in Blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not something they can control."

-He called for the reinstatement of the death penalty in a full-page ad regarding the Central Park Five, the black and latino teens who were found innocent (!) of a rape and murder, and when they were exonerated, completely exonerated, Trump still says they are guilty.

-All that Pocahontas stuff with Elizabeth Warren is crazy racist wow.

-How about the attempt at a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States"? Wtf.

-"An 'extremely credible source' has called my office and told me that @BarackObama's birth certificate is a fraud."

-How about saying Mexicans are bringing drugs and crime and calling them rapists?!?!? Trump said of a federal judge from Indiana(!), Gonzalo Curiel, whose parents are Mexican, who presided over the Trump U lawsuits, "He’s a Mexican," he said. "We’re building a wall between here and Mexico." Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called the remarks a "textbook definition of a racist comment."

-Telling Tlaib and Omar to "go back" to the "broken" countries they come from. Geez. Texbook, again.

-The US department of Justice sued Trump for discriminating against blacks in their renting practices. What does Trump say to the Justice Department lawyer during his deposition? "You know, you don't want to live with them either."

-He pardoned Joe fucking Arpaio who was determined by the US Department of Justice to have overseen the worst pattern of racial profiling in US history, which included "extreme racial profiling and sadistic punishments that involved the torture, humiliation, and degradation of Latino inmates." Trump called him a "great American patriot" and pardoned him!

There is so so so much more, but I'm worn out.

Trump is worse than other people. He has been worse than other people and so that target that you mention is well deserved. The benefit of the doubt on him ran out in the 1970s.

EDIT: In my haste I forgot the treatment of the immigrants and the separation of children from parents (how inhumane is that?!?!). And all the infestation talk. People hear words like "infestation" and they get it.

Here are some real quotes from Gavin McInnes, the founder of Proud Boys:

"I love being white, and I think it's something to be very proud of. I don't want our culture diluted. We need to close the borders now and let everyone assimilate to a Western, white, English-speaking way of life."

"I think a lot of accusations about me are inaccurate, but to call me a xenophobe is an accurate criticism."

"Trump personifies this sort of freedom to get back to: not literally making America great again but making America proud of its greatness again."

"Dead white guys built this country. Show some gratitude and show some reverence. But as far as slavery, yeah. It's part of history. And you know what? It's something we should be proud of."

"Fighting is fun - fighting solves everything."

"I'm becoming anti-Semitic."

"I want violence. I want punching in the face. I'm disappointed in Trump supporters for not punching enough."

I can keep doing this. Keep on supporting these assholes.

Im not excusing, what he’s done or said. I understand his history. I just think he really isn't worse than many other politicians. There are so many of these people in washington who have ties with the KKK, who if you dig it up have said just as vile things as Trump has, some worse. As culture has shifted a lot of them have thrown up their hands and said, “Ive changed!”, but they still dont really do things to enact change. They don’t mind the support of racists.

The difference is, Trump just never shuts up and gives us new fodder every day.

Edit: I shouldnt say he isnt worse than other politicians, obviously in many ways he is. I guess my point is that a lot of them enable racism, by enabling racists.

This kind of hyperbole is exactly what I'm talking about.

That's not really much of a troll, I'm disappointed. Need to add something to spice it up.

That definitely sounds like you are excusing him.

Examples please! And dead people don't count.

Uhhh, you don't think the he's worse than many other politicians? Didn't you read that stuff? I'd love to see examples of Obama or the Bushes or Clinton or any of these guys saying anything close the things Trump has said. Look and you won't find. This is unprecedented in my lifetime.

No its not saying a ton of people are bad is in now way saying its ok to be bad. When I have two kids behaving incorrectly, I dont say well its ok you were acting inappropriately so was your sister. I punish them both, its not excusing anything.
Hillary and Bill had numerous ties with David Duke and Byrd. Many of these guys who have been in washington for years have ties to the KKK, you can google it. I honestly could too but Im not going to until I have better internet service at my home.

I think what you are doing is more like saying a murderer is the same as a litterbug, they are both criminals.

Hillary and Bill had numerous ties with David Duke

I'm going to need to see some documentation on that, it sounds kind of unlikely.

I did google it and found where Duke said that Hillary should get the electric chair... I guess that means they were friends?

and Byrd.

Yes, Byrd was KKK. In the 1940s. Hillary and Bill were born around that time. I doubt they went to Klan meetings with him as babies. They did know him decades later. He was a horrible racist, but he's dead now.

Many of these guys who have been in washington for years have ties to the KKK, you can google it. I honestly could too but Im not going to until I have better internet service at my home.

I'll wait. Hillary, Bill, and Byrd are not in Washington now, so you need better (and living) examples.

No, your logic is flawed. Saying there are more than one racist in washington, is not saying that all criminals are the same. Its saying there are many people who benefit from racism in this country.

You could always go google it for yourself all the ties of the KKK, and other racist groups with people in office. Considering that racism has been a pillar of the US since it started, it seems unlikely that Trump is the only guy in there who’s a racist.

I think I may be misremembering Clinton and Duke as Im pretty sure Duke is / was a hard core Trump guy. Byrd though was definitely a Clinton supporter.

Im not 100% sure what your point is, oh thats right because you havent tried to make one!

It seems like you would like us to pretend that Trumps the only racist who holds an elected office, that some how he’s so much more racist then any other racist, that all the other racists are the litterbugs and Trumps the murderer.

Edit: If its not clear parts of this post are intentionally making irrational jumps in logic to prove a point.

Proud Boys are all pieces of shit, violent or not. The violent antifa/left people are pieces of shit too. There is a difference in the two sides. Acting like they're equal is ridiculous.

I posted this earlier, it looked like the ok sign to me, but people were upset about it so I did some googling of it, and apparently some racists groups have taken it for their purposes. I dont know but I will do more research and address it at work, since, we use that for saying our systems are up and running (the environment can get loud at times).
You must not have read this thread from awhile back. I'm not sure where it starts talking about the okay sign but I suggest you read it:

I must be living under a Tennessee rock, but before this past week, I had never heard of the Proud Boys.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/aug/16/portland-proud-boys-rightwing-march-liberal-city

............During the Obama years, Portland was widely seen as a redoubt of crunchy, progressive, west coast liberalism. Much of the world saw the city through the lens of Portlandia, a TV sketch show that lampooned hipsters, cyclists and fussy diners. The city was viewed as a liberal, cultural centre of the US – and a sharp contrast with more traditional conservative parts of the country. Its laid-back image was frequently satirised, not least by the comedian Fred Armisen, who said: “It’s where young people go to retire.”

Portlandia was more a caricature than a portrait, and locals noted what it left out – rapid gentrification and displacement, increasing homelessness, the contentious policing of the Portland police bureau (PPB) and the long racist history in the Pacific north-west that made Portland the whitest major city in America. The former NBA player Greg Oden said of his time playing in Portland: “It isn’t a great city to live in if you’re a young African American male with a lot of money.”

Even as Portlandia’s run was ending, a darker picture of the city was being painted, often by outsiders.

This weekend will see the latest in a long line of far-right gatherings that have plagued the city over the last few years. Various groups, including the most visible, the Proud Boys, will descend on the downtown area. Once again they will be met by leftist counter-protesters. And once again, PPB will be under heavy scrutiny for the way in which they police the event.

But how did Portland, for so long considered a bastion of American liberalism, become the centre of the country’s battle between left and right?

Ask Portland’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, what happened to the city’s brewpubs-and-bikes image, and he will say that behind the headlines and images of political street fighting, that city still exists.

“I would say Portland has not changed. The impression that people get these days is that everywhere you go in Portland violence is breaking out all over the place. That couldn’t be further from the truth.”(CONTINUED)

ANYONE that DEFENDS EITHER SIDE

HAS NOT ONLY CROSSED THE LINE OF DECENCY

THEY HAVE DECLARED WAR ON HUMAN DECENCY

No, your logic is flawed. Saying there are more than one racist in washington, is not saying that all criminals are the same. Its saying there are many people who benefit from racism in this country.

It's both-sidesism, excusing Trump because other people might be racist. Well, they might be, but they aren't president and they aren't overtly, publicly racist, other than Steve King.

You could always go google it for yourself all the ties of the KKK, and other racist groups with people in office. Considering that racism has been a pillar of the US since it started, it seems unlikely that Trump is the only guy in there who’s a racist.

Again, history isn't the issue here. Your claim was about the present, that there are multiple other people in Washington just as racist as Trump:

Im not excusing, what he’s done or said. I understand his history. I just think he really isn't worse than many other politicians. There are so many of these people in washington who have ties with the KKK, who if you dig it up have said just as vile things as Trump has, some worse.

I'm not seeing you supporting that charge.

Im not 100% sure what your point is, oh thats right because you havent tried to make one!

My point is that your point was inaccurate, and a way of excusing Trump's behavior.

It seems like you would like us to pretend that Trumps the only racist who holds an elected office, that some how he’s so much more racist then any other racist, that all the other racists are the litterbugs and Trumps the murderer.

I don't want you to pretend. I want you to support your claim. You claim there are other racists in Washington, tied to the KKK, who have said things worse than Trump.

You should be able to provide examples, if that is true. So far you haven't.

Yes well lining up on the streets every month to beat on each other and yell a lot seems like a great way to spend their time...

I find ANTIFA has always been just as hateful as the Proud boys. Just because its hating an ideology you don't agree with doesn't make it less hateful. All these protests/counter protests do, is inspire more hate.

All of these people need to be taken from Portland, sure I may “agree” more with being against Fascism, but not a single part of my being believes for a second that ANTIFA is some group of good guys just trying to help the world out by getting rid of “hate”.
They're all young people and therefor not too bright. However, look at the name Antifa. It is the result of opposing what they view as fascists which isn't exactly a terrible start. How about those who called themselves Nazis in Charlottesville, was that a good name for a start, excluding the fact that there were some very fine people among them.
