Man, what if Cho holds out (stupid) and doesn't end up trading Rudy? I can't remember Rudy's latest stance. Would he still lean towards staying in Spain and effectively become a no-show in Portland?

So what if Cho holds out leading to Rudy holding out?

Hold on...I'm thinking about it.

If it's a game of chicken, just ask yourself this: Who stands to lose more by blinking first or not blinking at all?

Hint: Cho is the guy behind the wheel of the proverbial dump truck and Rudy is on a Vespa.

Do chickens blink?

And so I find myself googling "do chickens have eyelids?"

And the answer is, yes, 3. 3 Per eye, I assume that means. That answer is available from any of dozens of websites, presumably built by people who care deeply about chicken eyelids.

So in a game of chicken, there will be a lot of blinking.

I just hope he doesn't 'settle' for an offer, like from Chicago and their own first rounder.

I wish I could be like Cho and get paid and do nothing.

I'm sure Vulcan will notice him playing computer solitaire all day and fire him. They like to cut costs, don't they?

It's really bizarre that Cho would work so hard to get to this point and then just zone out and challenge interns to games of trash can basketball. What was all that past effort for? Sad.

Some people just get complacent when they reach the top.

Working the phones is working, right? But nothing has gotten remotely close to being completed since this whole Rudy fiasco started. The roster is as unbalanced as it's ever been.

Rudy is making peanuts the next two years. Real Madrid could probably float him some endorsement deals in Spain to make up for sitting out the season, and once he does, the shit is on Cho big time to do something.

Cho has been WOOFING to the media about not being intimidated by Rudy, and not caving in to Rudy. Rudy should call his bluff and see what happens.

Honestly I don't care if we decide to stand pat with him and he calls the bluff and doesn't show up. He loses any chance of coming back to the nba and we lose what is looking like a late first round on a team that doesn't seem to like to make consolation trades. So we basically lose a first round pick that would sit on the bench... oh noes!.

I don't think we should be caving to a unhappy player that has been sandbagging. Take a hard stance on this so in the future if someone tries to pull this they can see what happened to Rudy.

:ohno:

Even with Rudy holding out/waiting on someone to up their offer I love the starting talent and overall rotation. They've got quality players at every spot... certainly well above average for the league or what the club has had in the past.

Ya, I agree, if not traded Rudy will have no choice but to show up. Otherwise he'll just get fine until he does. Believe me, no way is he going to sit out 2 years when his complaint in the first place is playing time.

Huh? How?

We've got prototypical complementary players at all five starting positions. (Pass-first PG, scoring SG, defensive SF, scoring PF, defensive/rebounding C). All of them have great size for their positions. Every one of those starters is a top 15 player at his position in the league. We've got two perimeter shooters (Batum, Roy), two midrange shooters (Aldridge, Miller) and a physically imposing power center (Oden). We've got a couple of proven, high quality guys coming in off the bench (Camby, Matthews). Matthews addressed our weaknesses in perimeter shooting and defense. We've got an up-and-coming youngster on the bench who saw his PER increase by 70% from year one to year two (Bayless). Some decent prospects/role players on the far end of the bench (Cunningham, Babbit, etc).

The only thing really out of kilter right now is Fernandez. And that's really nobody's fault but Fernandez. (Well, I was calling to trade him a year or so ago while his stock was high, so maybe you could argue it's Pritchard's fault for not capitalizing. But it's hard to complain about a GM who isn't here anymore.)

Frankly, I think it's been about a decade since our roster has been this balanced. It's not completely perfect (at some point it'd be nice to get a better perimeter shooter at PG), but geez.

Unbalanced roster:

Miller/Bayless/Johnson
Roy/Matthews/Rudy/Williams
Batum/Matthews/Babbitt
Aldridge/Camby/Cunningham
Oden/Camby/Przybilla/Pendergraph

15 man roster. We got 6 guys in between the PF/C slots. 3 or 4 with Roy who can play SF. 4 or 5 for SG, and 3 at PG. With 15 people on a roster, and 5 positions, you're going to have a few guys at each spot. I don't see the imbalance.

Put me in the category of "happy Blazer fan". If our biggest issue going into camp is whether a backup 2G that we don't need and who isn't costing the team much in salary will show up or get traded, we're in a pretty good spot.

Good point. Cho should hold out for Rose. Rudy for a 1st round pick is not even close to equal value

Do I sense sarcasm?

Rudy for a 1st round pick is fine, but I think what he's getting at is that Chicago is projected to be around what, maybe a 22nd-25th pick? What's the point in that? The Blazers will likely already have a 25th-28th pick and those picks have to be signed to a roster spot with a guaranteed contract or released. So we'd just be using up roster spots with late round prospects (hence the reason we could buy those picks with Paul Allen's money if we wanted to sit on some Euro players since most teams don't feel it's worth getting a 20-something pick that you have to sign to a contract. If it's the best, then OK, but hold out for something better than a sack of flour.

Solid post, Mook. I'll disagree with the "imposing" C though. A player sporting street clothes 70% of the time is hardly imposing...

I asked myself what I like about Rudy and what value he is to the team. I liked (likED) his fire, passion, guts, flashy skills and 3 pt shooting. I guess I see a player who lost his guts after a hard foul and appears to have lost his fire and passion, since it appears he doesn't even want to wear a Blazer uni anymore.

I compared Rudy's stats to Matthews. Matthews makes 10% more of his FG's. Matthews even shot a higher % from the three line. Other stats are similar, but I believe Matthews often was defending a higher caliber player and was in his rookie season.

From what I hear, Matthews is very discipline, a hard-worker and a team player --- and this goes back to his college years. To me, he's everything Rudy isn't. He's solid. He is going to make our team better and he'll play hard on both ends of the floor.

I don't care if Rudy shows or not. I'd like to get something of value for him, but I don't think he has much value after pretty much being proven as the weakest man on the floor in last years playoffs. For me, Rudy can stick it. He needs Portland a lot more than Portland needs him.

...We have no way to Know. All we can do is wait... Tic Toc Tic Toc

Let him no show if he wants, package him later for something valuable.

Chicago will be luck to get a pick that low. I say 20-25, so at worst case 25th pick in the draft for a player that has stated he wants to play in Europe is amazing value. Rudy knows he can make a gazillion times more money there then in the NBA

Agreed.

Blazers have already lost this battle by Nate's refusal to incorporate Rudy into the team, leaving him gathering dust in the spare parts bin since he arrived. Once the season starts without Rudy here they will lose what little value he still held for them.

Either way, the Blazers totally blew this and are much weaker for their mistake.

Showing up is not the same as playing well. Do you really think Nate would force him into a game against his wishes?

You can't be fined for not playing well.

Rudy has no leverage at all. If he's a no-show, he sits at home and wastes away two years of what should be the prime of his career and gets paid nothing from the Blazers. He can't play pro basketball anywhere in the world as long as he's under contract to the Blazers. Endorsements are pretty hard to come by if you're not playing.

If Nate blew it by failing to incorporate a guy who can't defend, doesn't have much of a handle, and has shown himself to have a tendency to disappear when things get tough, color me a fan of his blown decisions.

"Either way, the Blazers totally blew this and are much weaker for their mistake."

How is that? Did you even watch Rudy in the playoffs last season? Rudy is the weak one... The Blazers haven't lost anything except PA's money. It's Portland who is stronger and better when Rudy is NOT on the floor. Tell us how we are "weaker" due to mistakes?

Great analysis! that's why I come to this forum. Can't get that kind of stuff on RealGM!

I would like to complain, however, about the fact that when I googled for "chicken eye drops" all I found was

"Angels' Eyes Tear Stain Supplement for Dogs, Chicken Flavor, 120 gm
Angels' Eyes eliminates unsightly tear stains from the inside out! Angels' Eyes starts working before the tear stains begin and never adds food dyes or wheat which can have negative effects on your pet."

Which, to be honest, is, if not racist, specist!
