Well, duh. I said in the original thread on the topic, the jersey statement policy is a slippery slope, because freedom of speech goes both ways. Guess what, here we are! I know nothing about the senator in question, but asking the obvious question is more akin to playing devil's advocate than it is to trolling. If Woj didn't see that coming, as evidenced by how easily offended he was, then he's a lot less intelligent than I've given him credit for.

Were there players who wanted those messages and were denied? Honestly asking, because I may have missed it if there were.

If not, then it's silly for Hawley to suggest them just because those are the messages he supports. These are messages that the players will be wearing...they shouldn't be wearing messages they don't support just to make Hawley feel better.

The players themselves agreed to the statements that they wanted to wear. The players and the NBA are making a collective statement about Black Lives Matter and not an open forum to just share ideas. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't know of any NBA player who would want to say, wear "All Lives Matter" on their jersey. And I don't think anyone would want a swastika on the jersey either. So there are parameters. This isn't about what the Senator wants though. He is not in the league. He does not get to put a phrase on his jersey. So yes, Fuck You was the appropriate response.

From what I understand, the list was created in consultation with the players. I don't think that counts as a "fixed narrative"--this isn't something the NBA imposed upon the players, and an unpopular slate of messages (to players) wouldn't be an inducement to keep players willing to play.

The players weren't GIVEN an approved list. They MADE the approved list. The players. and the league came up with what they wanted to say and that's what the list. This is a statement by the players and the league.

Then why are players saying they wish they had more options? It sounded to me like the league worked with a select group of players (not sure if it was solely union reps) to come up with the list that was given to the players.

You're mixing up two issues. There are the approved statements that the players can choose from, and the ones they actually choose. Expanding the list would have been a smart move, whether or not any of the non-BLM related ones were chosen.

Maybe the perfect choice of words because that is sort of the point. The only reason to hijack this current, pertinent movement and insert unrelated causes is to dilute the message. This is a historic and solemn affair that has built itself up from the ground to international recognition. It deserves its time in the spotlight.

"Save the Whales!" "Spay and Neuter your Pets!" "Peace in the Middle East!" It is dumb and it is steeped in racism. And this is my point, this isn't about the troops or China or whatever, it is about BLACK LIVES. Clearly, that is not important to all. And many have made this clear. So this will be shocking but I'm with Woj. Sen. Hawley is shook. The most powerful voice that is filled almost exclusively with black voices and allies, is the NBA (see how fast Sterling was shown the door). Now they are uniting to try and topple the white supremacy that guys like Hawley depend on to stay in power. I doubt most of the NBA supports our oversized, superpower, warmongering military (not the troops that make it up but the politicians that continue to grow it with tax dollars that could be spent digging black people out of the hole of oppression) so "support our troops" translates into forget about the black lives matter movement, forget about social injustice and the reform needed to correct it and just keep growing that huge ass military. The players definitely don't want to "back the blue" in this moment of collective support for defunding a currently flawed and again oversized system that aims itself at and executes the role of oppressing and yes far too often killing black people. It may be important to note that defunding in most people's minds who support it means to stop overspending on authoritarianism in our streets or even that we reallocate the funds currently being used to oppress through uneven authoritarianism to programs that both protect and repair communities.

As far as China goes that message is really clear, the body of the NBA, the players don't care as much about the human rights violations being committed half way around the world as they do the human rights violations being committed right here, right now, against black people. The head of the NBA, the owners, could do a better job of communicating the fact that their stance is akin to "China buys shoes too" I think I got one owner's quote wrong but you get the picture. Eventually this problematic NBA foreign policy will need to be addressed in a different way but that is not what the body of the NBA wants the head addressing at this moment. It's strange that other companies that make billions through deals with China, who don't have the unique demographic and voice the NBA does, aren't being called on by the Sen. Hawley's of the world to do something about what's going on over there. Could that be because these other companies who are even more complicit in the problems over in China aren't shaking the foundation of power that those like Hawley now enjoy?

I am disappointed in Disney (what else is new) for kowtowing to injustice by not having Woj's back against Hawley. The statement could have very easily been, "We are sorry to see that Adrian gave into the obvious baiting and trolling that Sen. Hawley was undertaking. Woj's language, while understandable, is not the way we want our employees to address these obviously divisive comments from a federal government civil servant. It is worth noting that Adrian did make this statement to the Senator privately but it should not have come from his professional email account and we will be addressing that internally with him." Something along those lines would show the backbone that Disney has historically been missing when selling out and not supporting it's public facing ESPN employees.
