Worst case scenario at # 6

Based on everything we have heard I think that more than likely we will keep our pick at #6. Not a done deal by any means but if you had to bet, the odds are our position will not change.

So lets look at the WORST CASE scenario. For this thread let's just assume the first 5 picks will include Davis, Robinson, Beal, MKG, and Barnes. So with less than a week to go who would you pick at # 6 only.

Again I understand some of you do not want to keep the pick. You want to move up or down. But the reality is we will probably pick 6th and the odds are the 5 listed above will be gone. So who would you choose? It seems like the two choices come down to Lillard and Drummond, but there may be others as well. It is not an easy answer for me. I am torn, but right now I think I have to go with .............Lillard.

I am not ecstatic with the pick, but for a worst case scenario that is mine. Who is yours?

My worst case scenario would be some guy who turns out to be psychotic and shoots everybody in the team or takes control of the Blazers' 'plane and flies it into a hospital.

That. I am saying the other 5 will be gone. So the worst we can do in my mind would be Lillard.
Therefore your answer "psychotic player" would not be a good option.

So what you meant was "best of a bad lot"? Okay, assuming the rules of the game are that we can't trade the pick, I think I would go with....
John Henson. Why? Because it's harder to find players like him outside the lottery and we need defense. I'm not too worried about his average athleticism marks at the combine because he had a bad ankle, and basically you could see that he was good.

I'm torn, though. I have a feeling Tyler Zeller will be surprisingly good, but he has stumpy arms and I have the rule where I avoid players who suddenly improve in their final years (and he was a mediocre rebounder up to that point).

Lillard might be good. I doubt it. He's Mo Williams. Mo Williams is okay when you have LeBron at the 3, or after several years seasoning in the NBA, but he's not the answer at PG for us as a rookie, and I hope we get our PG in free agency.

I'm not sold on Dion Waiters. I'm tempted, but his strength is scoring in bunches, and there are tons of players like that in the NBA. He makes me think Marcus Thornton.

I'm still torn, because Henson is so skinny, and, like Camby, might take years to round into usefulness. If it wasn't for the back thing I would go Sullinger. It's like Zach without the Hoops Family.
But given the back, I might just shock the world and take Royce White. Why not? He's super talented: has great post moves, passes like a PG and rebounds like a motherfucker. Everyone and his aunt picks him as a "steal" because they know he'll be a contributor and they think he'll be there at the end of the first round. Same as Faried last year. Well, supposed Faried had gone at 6 last year - would that have been a bad pick? (Consider that who actually went there was Jan Vesely.)

Apparently I worded this wrong. I thought I was being clear. In the worst case scenario (The 6th pick) we are getting a good player. But who do you all want? I didn't want a thread talking about moving up, or moving down, or about hoping a player drops to us. We have those threads. Plus it is doubtful any of them will happen.

So the worst case scenario is # 6. (Which is still a good positon to be in)

So knowing that you can choose any player other than the top 5 mentioned, who do you want? We can choose anyone else.

For me it's Drummond. I know many here think Drummond will be a huge bust, but I like his upside. I would be excited about taking Drummond at #6.

BTW, I like your mention of Henson. In the abstract, his ceiling may not be as high as Drummond - but he is a lot more likely to reach it. Better the 2nd coming of Camby, than the reincarnation of Eddy Curry.

POR luck choosing Centers and Point Guards is pretty awful as well....

The Blazer haven't drafted a PG in the top 10 in decades. They have instead passed on some All-Star PGs. The difference between Lillard and someone like Telfair, is that other teams actually have him rated extremely highly too. The Blazers reached for Telfair at #13, even though he could have slid a lot farther down the board from all indications.

Seeing as how the PG spot is so damn important, I don't think using the #6 pick on the highest rated PG in the entire draft is much of a risk.

Best Case: Lillard (or if TRob or MKG falls)

Worst Case: Drummond

If we keep 6 I am happy with either Lillard or Drummond. Drummond is second youngest in draft, and uconn was super unstable

Here's grist to that mill:

In the 16 games in which the Cyclones faced RPI 100 opponents, his averages jumped to 17.1 points on 54.3 percent shooting, 9.9 rebounds, 2.9 offensive rebounds, 4.4 assists. 1.4 steals, and 1.0 blocked shots in 34 minutes per game. Depending on his opposition, he effectively went from an oversized point guard who could get all his teammates involved to quite possibly the most dynamic offensive prospect among the forwards in this draft class. When comparing the performances against teams in the RPI Top 100 of the fifteen forwards projected in NBADraft.net’s June 20th mock to go in the first round when, White ranked first in assists and free throws attempted, third in field goal percentage and steals, fourth in scoring and offensive rebounds, fifth in defensive rebounds, and seventh in blocked shots. His advantages also go into the more subjective where it can easily be argued that is the best ball handler of the group as well as the player who was the most successful finishing inside with both hands.

Drummond terrifies me. He may have a bit more physical talent than Henson or P3....but those guys are much better basketball players, and nobody is talking about them at #6. I would opt for Lillard. He might be a stud, and he is far less likely to be a total waste of a uniform.

I know alll the red flags about Lillard - but IMHO, none of them equal the questions about Drummond's head and heart.

Sounds like you figured it out just fine. Rod Singleton is a super choice. Although I think he would have been better off entering the draft after the 2011 season. His PER dropped a little this year.

Drummond is the epitome of swinging for the fences. I hope they go for it
