rather than 17 weeks with 1 game playoffs? 
Would the NFL be better if the season was just 12 weeks with best of three playoffs..

I like it the way it is. I like the finality of the games. Having a series would only lessen it.

College hoops and football don't have a best of series, and they have some of the most exciting playoff games in sports.
And with football, there is a week off between games, so it would take forever to have a series. It would get boring. Basketball and baseball can have two or three games in a single week and be fine.
