again as a free agent since he's opting out? I think I would to secure the three point shooting and he's only 30. If Oden produces, LA stays consistent, and Roy is waived...James could sit on the three abusing teams.

I think with a hardcap coming in... Miami is in trouble to pay all these guys, they'll need young inexpensive players and Diebler, Babbit, Elliot and such may be very attractive to them...

Hell yes! He would immediately be our best outside shooter!

My thinking as well... He'd punish teams that would have to focus on Oden and LA!

Absolutely. In fact I say we do a sign and trade with Miami where we send them Babbitt and Diebler.

No. I was happy to see him leave three years ago. I certainly don't want him back now.

Ed O.

I thought he was great for us^.

What is he, 215? 220? I could pick him up. I don't think I would, however.

He could fill the gap that was Rudy's role*. At one point, he was shooting 50% from the 3-pt line. Then, he got injured and his shooting percentage went down. He also played better defense than Fernandez but that's not saying too much. All in all, an excellent role player that would blend extremely well with Felton, Wallace, Aldridge, and Oden.

*Imo, the Blazers needed less complex players like Rudy who, while a talent, required a higher pace and also, the ball in his hand.

I am shocked he played a whole season last year. (after back to back 40 game seasons)

No we have other more important needs. Vet PG and another "big". No doubt we need shooters, but It still ranks 3rd on the priority list for me.

Plus he is from Miami and he ain't leaving unless someone over pays him.

I would pick him at at minimum salary for sure, he'd be a great 10th man. But at that price I doubt he moves.

Now if we have to give him more money it depends on what the opportunity cost is; will his salary be part of a hard cap in the future? Or do we lose part of our MLE? If that is the case I would hold off on signing him until we get a backup big man and the other superior free agents find a home.

But I would put him on the roster over an Armon, Patty, or Earl Barron. Hell I'd think of cutting Babbit if we hadn't picked up his 3rd year option.

He has been injured a lot this year for Miami. If he were cheap i'd pick him up but if he costs us a lot i'd pass.

Somebody please name a better shooter on our roster?

Wes is a 40% 3 point shooter
Jones is a 40.2% 3 point shooter
So they're pretty much the same % from three.

I don't know how it got down to 40%. He was a great, great shooter for us and for Miami. He won games for us by himself. But he misses as many games as Roy. Maybe those two could arrange to get injured only when the other doesn't. Then I'd be for it.

He actually shot the best % when he was with us. Before us he never had a 40% season (although he was close in Indiana is third year) and 2 of his three seasons with the heat have been above 40%. He was injured on the heat every year but last year, great to see him back in somewhat decent health though.

The reason he opted out was he was making the vet minimum and wants a raise. So, forget signing him for the vet minimum to come back to Portland. At the every least, after playing in 81 games and shooting 0.429 from 3-point range, I expect Miami will again offer him at least the vet minimum, or maybe a little more.

He's a solid 3-point shooter, but his two best years have been in Portland when he had Zbo and a healthy Brandon Roy to feed off of and last season with LeBron, Wade and Bosh all drawing all the defensive attention. The fact is, he can't create his own shot. He's a stand still 3-point specialist who is only effective when opposing defenses leave him completely wide open to focus on other players. He's a good locker room guy, but other than 3-point shooting brings NOTHING else on the court (career PER = 11.4, career best PER = 13.6). He is a very limited player, but at least he knows his limitations and doesn't hurt his team trying to do things he can't.

So, it really comes down to these two issues. Will the Blazers have at least two players drawing double teams that will create wide open looks on the perimeter for players like Jones (or Babbitt or Dielbler)? I think the only way that happens is if Greg Oden is healthy, or Paul Allen funds the development of a time machine so we can have 2008-09 Brandon Roy back. Because right now, the only player on our roster deserving of a double team is LaMarcus Aldridge, and only if he is Beast Mode LaMarcus operating down in the low post. Do we have a spot on this roster, and in the rotation, for a 3-point specialist? Because that's what James Jones is. We've drafted two guys like that in the last two drafts. Did we waste those picks, or can Babbitt or Diebler fill that role. Although it's questionable if either of those two can create their own shot, hopefully if they are getting the same kind of wide open looks Jones would require, they'd be able to knock those shots down. If they can't hit a wide open 3, then why the fuck did we draft them?

Jones only played here one season and without ZBo. He came over in the Zbo trade.

I agree with your analysis BNM, that's a good way of breaking Jones down. I would say when he was here he was an above average defender, not as good as Wallace or Batum but much better than Rudy or Roy.

But I would argue last season we needed a niche player who could hit an open 3 pointer more than any other position, it would've been more important than a good backup PG or backup PF. If we can get more 3 point shooting from Wes, Nic, Felton and Roy this upcoming season then it may not be an issue.

In the playoffs Dallas was able to clog the middle, pack it in down low which really slowed LaMarcus and Wallace. Batum and Rudy were atroucous from outside, missing wide open 3's countless times. I believe if we had been shooting 3pointers decentely, not great but about league average, we would've won that series.

From Miami, hates rainy cold weather, don't think he'd come back.
