OT WoW! 19 Year Old Auston Matthews makes history in thrilling NHL debut for Leafs

IIRC, didn't the NHL just have its first ever US born MVP? Yeah, if we could have a few more, that could be significant.
Yep, Patrick Kane won last year. First ever American born Hart Memorial trophy winner. Think about that for a minute 1 out of 92 is ridiculous. It's odd to think of it this way because the NHL is all over the US, but guys like Kane and Matthews can do for kids playing hockey in America what guys like Dirk and Sabas did for kids playing basketball in Europe

Olympics come to mind...
I don't think the Olympics mean much anymore. The 1980 team brought awareness to the sport because our "kids" beat the evil Russians. Now it's millionaires playing against each other

Did I wake up and log onto bizarro world????

Honestly. Not trying to stir anything, but I thought you said you weren't gonna change?
Now see, this I can respect. And no I don't think you did this for me. :) But I thank you just the same.

You're right, from a mainstream perspective. For people who don't give a shit about hockey in general 1980 is probably the only memory they have regarding the subject. But the Olympics are still a HUGE deal in the hockey community, it is arguably the most anticipated event there. The best players from around the world basically say screw whatever league they play in and show up to represent their countries.

Let me ask you: how was the hockey world cup event from last month (or whatever it was called) viewed in the hockey community? With national and continental teams, it seemed kind of convoluted.

I honestly couldn't say. I have never gotten into world cup hockey myself, and thinking about it, I don't really know anyone who is. I think its definitely bigger among minor league players tho, more or less a way for young guys to get recognition.
