Wow...anyone hear what quick said about Oden on the fan?

Yikes Kingspeed, your really not making much sense.

And for the record, Rookie year per 36 minute statistics:

Dwight- 13.2pts, 11.1rebs, 1.0ast, 1.0stl, 1.8blk, 2.2tov, 52% FG%, 67% FT%, PER-17.2

Greg- 13.0pts, 12.7rebs, 1.2ast, 0.6stl, 2.7blk, 2.8tov, 48% FG%, 65% FT%, PER- 16.8

With Microfracture surgery, 18 months away from basketball, and two minor foot/ankle injuries to start training camp/regular season play (further inhibiting his conditioning/development) I'd say he's doing pretty respectable out there even for a number 1 pick.

I never called Greg Oden a bust, but everyone is acting like I did. The problem with the internet is that you can't hear tone of voice.

Congratulations! You just broke Gavin Dawson's world record in the 100 meter backpedal.

Why doesn't Greg average more minutes?

Because Orlando sucked and had no talent and Portland is the 2nd best team in the west with a top 8 center on the roster. Oh, and he's coming back from surgery and slowly being brought along and into shape. If you want to complain about Oden's minutes, blame Nate.

"per 36 minute" stats don't mean much to me. Nothing against Greg. I'm just saying in general, I don't think those stats cross over. He grabbed 5 rebounds vs the Lakers. That doesn't mean he'd grab 20 if he played all game. This is not about Greg though. This is about that kind of stat.

Who's Top 8? Joel or Greg?

Joel. Greg is obviously better, but he's out of shape and out of sync. Wait until you see the difference between Greg now and 3/4 into the season.

So back to the original point here....

The radio guys ask Quick where Oden's head is at, and he responds: "I don't even know because, to be honest, I can't really stand to be around him. He's such a downer. I've got no interest in talking to him right now."

Let me get this straight: The Oregonian's beat writer can't address the development of a cornerstone of the franchise, because HE HAS NO INTEREST IN TALKING TO HIM?!?!?!? It is his job to talk to him!!! Nice journalism, Quick.

Chill the F out Speed.

Oden, in spite of coming off microfracture surgery, which kept him off the court for 18 months, and the injury suffered opening night that further delayed his comeback/conditioning has 7 double-doubles in his first 16 NBA games. Dwight Howard, facing NONE of these obstacles AND playing considerably more minutes had 5 double-doubles in his first 16 NBA games.

So, Oden is actually AHEAD of Howard's rookie pace - and that's not per/36 production, that's pure, raw production.

Give the kid a chance. Stop saying he "has all the earmarks of a bust". He's played 16 games after missing 18 months with major knee surgery - and HE'S DOING FINE AND WILL ONLY GET BETTER.

Let's keep it real for a moment. He gets stripped and blocked a lot. He has very little personality on the court as someone said. The great centers came out and dominated from the get go. Granted, they didn't have a year off beforehand but let's not forget that Oden was underwhelming in summer league BEFORE the surgery. I pray that he's not a bust. But so far, he doesn't have the earmarks of a HOFer.

Sorry, I missed the previous comments that voiced both of my points. I just couldn't wade through all of the histeria.

Yes, but Eric this isn't a new thing for you. You're always making sensationalistic statements. You are the Bill Walton of this forum community. Someone is either the greatest thing ever, or they're a bust.

Throw it down big man, throw it down!

Eric, this thread is the worst thread... in the history of western civilization!

Eric is one of the greats, Not just of this generation, but of all time.

Oh, and BTW - Greg Ostertag is one of the top centers on this planet!

Who are the top 7 centers?

In no order: Yao, Dwight, Joel, Bynum, Kamen, Ilgauskas, Bogut

...TRUE C's are pretty thin right now...If you want to expand to the PF/C guys this list would be a lot different

...wait...why did i answer this here?

Keepin' it real means being even keeled and not flying off the handle (up or down) and having an ability to look at things without passion -- ie. being objective.

The fact that you think he's a bust (today ... who knows what tomorrow holds) tells me that he's probably just fine.

Wow, you guys are being kind of hard on KingSpeed. He does have a point. It is really too hard to tell what GO will end up doing. He is more than Darko and Kwame at this stage.

You know who GO reminds me of? Martell. Seems to have lots of talent with a great body for the game, but has something going on upstairs that is preventing him from seeing his potential. I'm willing to give GO more time though.

i think Hoopworld's rookie rankings is pretty right on this week: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=10871

#3 – Greg Oden – Portland Trail Blazers (15-7) – 7.9ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.6bpg
Oden, who was ranked one spot lower last week, is starting to show flashes of the dominance he's going to exhibit in the not-too-distant future. Added to that is the overall team success of the Blazers, and you've got a defensive superstar in the making.

I will agree that his body language is less than inspiring. But I was hoping that was because he was a 7-ft guy. He needs a bit more swagger in his step. If the Blazers want to hire me I'll coach up his confidence using NLP, Hypnosis and other techniques.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Do you think players want to always talk to the media? But if a player told Quick the media is a downer and I have no interest in talking to them, Quick would tear them a new ass faster than you can say "Oregonian article." Yet QUick can come out and make a public statement that he has no interest in doing his job? Quick, since the days of the jailblazers, has always put himself above players.

That being said, I don't think Quick would say all this without a little foundation there. I get the feeling, GO is a bit of a head case. But as long as he dominates the paint on the defensive side and brings much needed muscle to the Blazers, I think the easy answer is a team therapist and medication. :D

he is a tool's tool. This isn't the first or second time he's demonstrated that being the O's Blazer Beat Writer is really about who Jason hearts.

We deserve better

You can tell after 15 games? LOL. Bottom line is that the dude averages 8 boards and 8 points after ONLY 15 games. But I am sure he appreciates you giving him more time.

Wasn't that interview a perfect tool storm? You have Big Suck and Ian Furness (I think) talking to Jason Slow about something other then College Football. I think my IQ went down 10 points just from listening to that.

Wow, you guys are being kind of hard on KingSpeed. He does have a point.

Not really. Oden is dominating, for a rookie, on a per-minute basis. His raw numbers aren't dominating becase he doesn't play a lot of minutes...which is due to being in basketball shape, having spent a year away from the game. What's difficult to understand about that?

You know who GO reminds me of? Martell. Seems to have lots of talent with a great body for the game, but has something going on upstairs that is preventing him from seeing his potential.

Funny, he doesn't remind me of Webster at all. Maybe because Webster was very unproductive in his rookie season, while Oden is extremely productive. Also because Webster didn't contribute much on defense, while Oden has transformed the team defense from one of the worst to one of the better ones.

Outside of that, they're pretty similar. Except that Oden isn't in peak shape yet, while Webster was.

I'm willing to give GO more time though.

More than 16 games? Generous. ;)

If by the 30-game mark, though, Oden isn't arguably the best player in the game, then KingSpeed has a point and we should probably start looking for a new center to back up Przybilla, long-term!

I wonder if people ever get tired, what with jumping on and off the bandwagon so often.
