Wow...anyone hear what quick said about Oden on the fan?

There has been nothing about Oden off the court that would make me think he is a downer. He has a funny blog, a goofy sense of humor, and is involved with some really cool youth mentoring things around the state. Nothing about him screams "head case" or "withdrawn." I think people get confused by his expression and his body language on the court. He has a face that looks just kinda... sad. But that's just how he looks. Doesn't mean he's actually sad. And don't confuse the ungainliness of a very young 7-foot body with pouting or being withdrawn. If anything, having tools like Quick (and about 100 people on this message board) playing armchair shrink is what would make me depressed.
 
Happy or glum, I really don't think Greg Oden wants Mike Conley to be his PG on this team. They had fun in college and are close friends, but they're not lovers.

Can you happily go about performing your job even though your best friend isn't your work partner?

Most people actually prefer it that way.
 
Joel, after 22 games, is shooting .814 FG%.

Next closest that plays regular is Nene at .633.
 
Leaving PF's out of it, Yahoo Fantasy Sports has Joel ranked as the 6th best true Center right now.

YEah, my normal look makes me look like I'm pissed off. My wife still doesn't get it. I'll be sitting there with my normal face and she'll go:

"What's wrong?"
"What? Nothing's wrong."
"No really, what's wrong? You look like something is bothering you."
"I don't know what you are talking about. Nothing is wrong."
"You have that look on your face."
"What look? I'm just sitting here."
"Well if you're gonna be like that."
"Like what? What the hell are you talking about?"
"Don't yell at me!"
"I'm not yelling! I don't know what the hell you're talking about!"
"Whatever!"
"So uh, does this mean no sex after the kids fall asleep?"

That last part I just think inside my head.

The thing with Oden is last year while rehabbing, I found him to be a funny, joking kind of guy who showed a sense of humor with players and the press.

This year it is different. I don't think this is his normal personality or normal expressions, I think the dude is not having much fun (although the last game against Toronto was the most animated I had seem him. Watch his reaction when Blake makes the shot.)

I wonder if Oden had a choice (got paid the same for basketball as for some other job), if he would play basketball (that's right I said it). I wondered it before he was drafted and I wonder it now . . . hopefully he sees the light and realizes how much more fun life is being an NBA player than it is pulling teeth out of people's mouths. :D

It looks to me like 22 games into his career, Oden's already matching Bynum's stats for his second season in the NBA. My bet is that by the end of the year he's likely to be putting up numbers pretty consistent with Bynum's numbers for this season.

Considering the microscope Greg is under and the willingness of some folks to jump on him so prematurely, it doesn't seem too surprising that he's down a bit. I also suspect that he's his own harshest critic and that he's finding it hard to adjust to not being able to totally dominate the game the way that he did in high school and at Ohio State.

No doubt. A lot of people on this board don't give Greg credit for the things he does already. One thing he does better than anybody else on the team, is affect shots on the inside. It is no surprise the Blazers are ranked so much higher defensivly now, then they were last year. Also his rebounding is great, just remember last year we had Channing Frye playing out of position at center, and his rebounding leaves a lot to be desired even at it's best. Lastly, I would like to point out that the guards have missed Greg for opportunities about a bazillion times now. When he is running down the lane, and his hand is up, throw it to the big fella. He might surprise you.
 
As long as Oden stays healthy he's going to be a special center. My only fears has been his health not his ability. I think it's tough on him because he wants to do so much, but the Blazers are limiting what they want him to do right now for the teams good as well for him in the long run. So he has a conflict with what he wants and what the team wants at this time which might account for part of his mental state. I don't blame him, he wants to show he's worth being the #1 pick, but he is doing what's ask of him.
 
I'm not worried about Greg being a bust, but I guess my definition of bust might be a little different. I think some people would be disappointed if Greg never turns into the hall of fame center that some scouts labeled him. Hall of famers don't grow on trees. I would be happy if Greg does his job to the best of his ability and we win Championships.

Perfectly true - but also beside the point. Quick wasn't talking basketball, he was whining that he doesn't *like* Oden.
 
Greg is playing with zero confidence and lacks heart. The guy jogs up and down the court for fuck sakes. It's only a matter of time until he goes to where he belongs - the bench.
 
Btw, it seems like Oden can't get a call on the offensive end when he's hammered by 3 guys, yet on the defensive end he can tap the player he's guarding and boom, foul.

I'm sure he's a little pissed about that.

Unfortunately, this will soon become his reputation if Nate doesn't stand up and fight for Oden's foul rep.

I just don't see Nate doing it, however.

I'm beginning to think the other players aren't so keen on him as well.

It's sad, but it looks like Oden will become high maintenance.

I have also considered the possibility that Greg Oden may not really enjoy playing basketball. I first thought of this when he kept getting injured and sick. Is it possible his body is trying to send a message? Obviously we don't know at this point, but I don't think it hurts to speculate. For Oden himself it might help to explore this possibility; he might be able to accept that maybe he doesn't enjoy basketball that much but that it is a very good paying job, and that he could also develop other interests. But to suppress his conflicted feelings could be dangerous (more injuries?) and I don't think it's healthy to try to suppress doubts on this board also.

I went to the game and was watching that tonight.

Oden does talk to his teammates. When they gather, I'm close enough to see Oden talking to players and players talking to him. He was acknowledging player's good plays and cheering on the bench (couldn't see much of him on the bench).

Given that, there is a strange chemistry going on. Oden isn't ostracized, but he doesn't get into it as much as the other players or communicate with others as much. Even during introduction he doesn't do the jumping back bump or anything close to it, he just half walks and jogs out.

If I was a fly on the wall I want to hear what Roy is saying to Oden. After a couple of those fouls, Brandon would go over to him and start talking to him. It looks like he is almost yelling at Greg (doesn't look happy and mouth moving quite a bit) . . . but maybe Roy is just into the heat of the game while talking to Oden. I saw this exchange at least three times.

I can't place it, but Oden doesn't look right. Right before tip off, players are jumping up and down, getting pumped, Howard is playing mind games as he stands at the free throw line . . . but everyone seems ready to go except the big guy.

Last note: Howard is one cool cat. While the Blazers are being introduced, Howard is playing around with three kids on the base line. He smiles up to the crowd all game and plays around with his teammates alot. He comes across as a big kid having a blast . . . kind of the opposite of Oden.
 
Yeah, Howard is great on and off the court.

Howard is the type of Center that would be awesome on our team. Oh well.

Nice post . . . I appreciate how we can discuss this without being "haters." You are right, it is all speculation and I don't claim to have any inside knowledge . . . but this board is about discussing and analyzing the Blazers and observations about GO are part of it.

Maybe GO is being over scrtinzed compare to other players . . . but it goes with the teritory when the franchise put so much into GO (welcoming at pioneer place, selling record amount of season tickets based on Oden, ect.)

I hope GO is alright in the head or gets alright, because I've seen another side to GO that likes to have fun and joke around and it is that attitude that will help his game and more importantly help him fit in with the team.

I did not know this about Howard till last night. After watching him all night, on the court and off, I have developed a strong impression of him. He is nice, appreciates fans, has fun with himself and the game . . . but does all this while remaining an intense competitor on the court.

You are right, his attitude would fit perfect with the Blazers , IMO. But not everyone can have a Howard . . . and who knows, maybe when GO gets confidence in his game he will come out of his shell.
 
He has a great family and a strong faith in God. He has been awesome since his rookie year.

He IS acting more like a super star with much more complaining and getting into his teammates, but I think the latter NEEDS to be done. He is a great person.
