Big Z is not joining the Evil Empire. We're going to lock him in Spring Training
Not a CHANCE. Have you seen the fat contracts mediocre pitchers have gotten on the market this off-season? Zambrano is licking his chops thinking about what he's going to be offered next year.
And with all the money they've already spent, they've not got the money in the future for him.
We have plenty of revenue streams. After feeding the cash cow for years, the Trib has decided to finally spend it. Our tickets are expensive ($20 gets you the worst seats possible), we get money from the rooftop owners, we have that advertising sign behind home plate, we scalp our own tickets, we got plenty of dough
You do realize that most money comes from TV rights and merchandise sales, and not tickets and in-stadium advertising, right? I mean hell, it only costs half a mil per year to name a stadium after your business (part of the reason the Cubs haven't re-named Wrigley, it's not all that profitable to do so).Are the Cubs going to get on TV more than before? No. Are their merchandise sales going to go up? Maybe some, but most cubs fans spend their money regardless of the star power.
I realized something else today. This shortens the gap even more between the payroll of the Red Sox and the Yankees. Pretty soon the Sox will have highest payroll at this rate.
If you include the posting fees, I think the Yanks and Sox are spending about the same this year on their rosters.
