What the hell have you been watching? Yi has been the worst player on the Chinese team. If it wasnt for him, Yao probably wouldnt pick up all those fouls. And can he step up to do something? ALways dissapearing to the background. The kid really hasnt played any good this whole summer. Other than a couple of dunks here and there, he's been garbage. Mike Breen and Doug Collins said it numerous times on tv, they wondered where Yi has been, he just no where to be found.

I missed the gamea, but only 4 shot attempts is odd. Then again he must have been doing something to get 9 rbs and 3 steals, but since you saw the game:

1- Did he ask for the ball?
2- Did the guards get him the ball?
3- Did it seem like the coach was calling plays for him?
4- Was the D on him hard enough that he had to give the ball up?
5- Was he running around like a chicken without a head?

I didn't watch the Spain game, but I could see it in the USA game too.

And the criticism has nothing to do with making shots, but the guy appears to have no idea where to be on the court.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's all caught up in the celebrity status surrounding this team. Yao was raised to do this and can handle that part since it evolved with him. Yi fell into this whole thing as a teen.

Yi on the other hand had his chance with the Bucks, and now with his country where he should feel comfortable, being home and all, and still he can't show anything. He's just an average player.

The observation is there and no one is ripping their hair out (except maybe Carter15Net).

You can't not look at the game and have no opinion on how he is playing. If he was playing great people would be excited for him and the upcoming season.

Yes, he's still young and hopefully all will be okay, but right now he is clearly out of it.

Right now. The guy is 20, not 30 like Kobe. Relax, these games are not the end all be all of his entire career.

Obviously not the game, since the sports networks have been assholes and haven't shown the games at a reasonable time!

I'll probably never know how Yi really did, but the fact that he picked up 9 rebounds and 3 steals says he did something noteworthy.

Who knows though, maybe the international game just isn't for him.

Do you realize that was his rookie year? What were you expecting from him? Clearly, way too much. He's young and has plenty of time to learn. Not all rookies come out like Lebron, Wade, Carmelo etc.

Yea I know I'd feel real comfortable holding the expectations of a 4 billion populated country on my back, "supported" by fans who seem to be more interested in a lebron dunk than my own team winning, and especially being coddled by that oh-so-sympathetic Chinese government. Yep Yi should be dropping 30 points a night in that stress free environment.

Maybe you guys can find a middle ground between both extremes? It's not that hard. His lacklustre play in the Olympics does mean something and it is worth worrying about. But it sure as hell doesn't guarantee he'll be a bust in the NBA next year.

Yi needs to address his lack of assertiveness by the time the NBA season kicks off, that's for sure. You'll all probably hate me saying this, but Yi's summer so far reminds me a lot of Andrea Bargnani's summer last year.

That's one thing that has concerned me.

It's one thing to be put up on a pedestal for your achievements and another thing to be put on a pedestal by a whole nation for your potential. Yao didn't seem to buy into the hype and put his head down and worked and lived up to the potential.

Believing the hype achieves your potential rather than hard work is often the down fall of most gifted athletes that fail.

I hope that's not the case with Yi. If he has a strong work ethic he should be alright.

Yi's not 20. Reports are he's already 24 years old (in a Chinese newspaper, they said he was 23 before he was drafted)

Anyways, Yi has been struggling but I wouldn't be going crazy about it. Although not consistently, Yi has shown he can play in the NBA. If I remember correctly, didn't he win East Rookie of the Month with the Bucks? Olympics are one thing, some players play better in International competition than others, Tim Duncan looked like crap in Athens, but I'm sure anyone would LOVE to have him on their team

Reports vary on that. I'm giving him benefit of the doubt for now. That Chinese newspaper wouldn't be the first paper to get a number wrong.

Remember: the Olympics is not the end-all for a players' NBA career.

I have faith that once Yi is put into Lawrence Frank's system - the one that Nenad flourished in - alongside Vince, who is great at the pick and roll, Yi should do just fine.

I think someone told Yi not to get hurt in the Olympics at all cost.

If you look at it from this perspective it makes sense. Yi already gave up on the Olympics, there is no way China will medal. Yao is playing like a crazy man out there. He almost got hurt quite a few times.

Also, I don't think Yi gets along with Yao. Plus, the coach for China screwed up big time today. Yao wasn't physically ready to play and it was poor execution focusing on Yao on offense, causing many turnovers.

don't know what else to say. how hard should a guy play when he knows he's going to lose? how should we judge that player?
