Ah, better than I expected. I'm guessing he didn't play all that much, and that Yao was the primary and secondary option when he was in the game..?

Not sure, didn't see the game. But your guess is probably right. Plus, it's just Angola. I'm more interested in how Yi does tomorrow against Australia (and Bogut) and then in the championship game against Argentina, assuming both make it.

Yi had a really poor game. He scored on dunks and lay ups created for him by other players. Aside from rebounding he did little else. He just looked like he was going through the motion and not really giving a lot of effort out there. He hardly got himself involved in the half court offense. No post up, nothing. Missed a couple of long range jumpers. However he didn't played with any fire or desire to impose his will on the game. Offensively he looked like the worst Chinese player on the floor. In fact in clutch time he was actually substituted by the coach in favor of Wang Zhi Zhi because Yi was a liability on offense. This is no a good sign for him and his supporters. I hope the guy can turn it around because right now, he isn't playing with any confidence or fire.

CNT ran some strange anti-zone offense for 3 quarters where the PF was at the 3 point line passing to Guards shooting off screens. Yi didn't get many touches but he did convert pretty well inside. He tried to drive once from the wing and turned it over and benched.

I can't be as harsh on Yi this game, the offense wasn't ran for him and I thought he played ok on defense and was good distributing the ball.

I agree, Yi didn't play exceptionally well today. He could have been more assertive. He was sometimes caught standing around outside the paint, but WZZ the other PF ran the same play. Catch the ball at the 3point line and watch the guards run the screen then pass for the open shot. After the pass the PF run baseline screen to the low post. Yi wasn't out played by his alternate Wang ZhiZhi. They both struggled similarly.

The CNT was determined to use Yao to beat down their smaller opponents. Yao elbowed a guy in the neck and got a technical. I thought that was a message.

I find it a bit discouraging to see him only muster 11 points against the worst competition they will face in these Olympics. I understand he isnt the main option, but I hope to see some promising play out of him this summer to give us something to look forward to as he joins our club.

As someone who hopes he becomes a great player in the NBA, there's probably been nobody more disappointed with his form so far than me. I just hope he will start playing with more fire and determination when the Olympics come around. Yao maybe the best player and the focal point of the team but that is no reason to play passive and defer some much of his game. You just really want to see him step up and show more authority on the court. Anyway regardless of how he performs at the Olympics, the Nets and him have a lot of hardwork ahead to develop him into a good NBA player.

I must admit, as of now I've only been judging his performance based upon box scores and other people's analysis of his play, however, as you said, it appears he has disappointed thus far. I agree there is a lot of work to be done from both sides before he can be considered a good NBA player, but he has shown flashes (the game vs. Min. last season just as an example) and clearly has the tools to be a successful player in the league. These games are just another opportunity for him to showcase his talents and [rove that he can be that player that we all hope he can evolve into. If he cannot be a force against a team like Angola at the international stage, however, some question marks are going to be arising as to how far away he really is in terms of taking that next level as a player and truly improving and expanding his game. I realize we will need to be patient with him as well as the rest of our youngsters, however, and hopefully we will see some more inspired performances by him this summer as the competition becomes tougher.

Calm down, Yi only took 1 jumpshot the entire game. He had fast break alley oop dunk. They beat the scrub team.

I'm more interested in the game vs his old teammate Bogut today. Still, Yi is on a short leash. One mistake and he get the bench.
