Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Friday that will allow children in California to have more than two legal parents, a measure opposed by some conservative groups as an attack on the traditional family.

Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) said he authored the measure to address the changes in family structure in California, including situations in which same-sex couples have a child with an opposite-sex biological parent.

The law will allow the courts to recognize three or more legal parents so that custody and financial responsibility can be shared by all those involved in raising a child, Leno said.

"Courts need the ability to recognize these changes so children are supported by the adults that play a central role in loving and caring for them," Leno said. "It is critical that judges have the ability to recognize the roles of all parents so that no child has to endure separation from one of the adults he or she has always known as a parent."

The bill was partially a reaction to a 2011 court decision involving a lesbian couple that briefly ended their relationship, according to Leno's office. One of the women was impregnated by a man before the women resumed their relationship. A fight broke out, putting one of the women in the hospital and the other in jail, but the daughter was sent to foster care because her biological father did not have parental rights.

"Everyone who places the interests of children first and realizes that judges shouldn't be forced to rule in ways that hurt children should cheer this bill becoming law," said Ed Howard, senior counsel for the Children's Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego School of Law.

SB 274 was opposed by advocates for traditional families, including Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, who said Friday he was disappointed by the governor's action.

"This is in the long run going to be a mistake," Dacus said. "The ones who are going to pay the price are not the activists, but it's going to be children, who will see greater conflict and indecision over matters involving their well-being."

Dacus said having more than two legal parents will create the potential for greater conflict over what is best for a child and result in more complicated court fights.

Doesn't say what the criteria is but I see good in it. One of my sons married a woman who had a 5 year lld son. His biological father (her ex) is still somewhat in the picture between DUI arrests. . He gets weekends twice a month but she has full custody and my son has been his father figure for 3 years. Makes sense he should be recognized as such and allowed to adopt him.

You hear of a step dad yo?

That's a label, with no parental rights attached.

Step Dads get parental rights by adopting the child. Mick's dumb comment notwithstanding, adopting that step kid is a commitment. You get a divorce, and you will end up paying child support.

But Maris' point is that presently the step-dad can't adopt if the bio-dad still has parental rights. This bill would change that.

Maris gives a voice of reason.

El Presidente continues to live in a fact free zone. There are children who already have three (or more) parents. Parenting is not about a sperm and an egg. California now legally recognizes this FACT.

Maris gave one scenario. There are other situations where a child is raised by more than two adults. Another is a lesbian couple raising a child after one of the women was inseminated by a male friend who also participates in raising the child. Dear Abby this morning ran a letter regarding a married woman who is pregnant by a man not her husband and they are arranging that this man will share in parenting.

Ignorance is easier than knowledge. It's surely easier to spout off than to learn, you know, actual facts. But there really is a world beyond talk radio and Fox.

This is going to cause Maury Povich to officially retire.

I wonder what the max number of parents will be. ..8? Wait. .. that would be totally bigoted and ignant if 9 people wanted to be a parent.

I had a friend back 20+ years ago and her family of two dads and 3 moms lived together out in monmouth oregon. There was a 4th woman who left early on, but the five parents that remained all helped raise 10 children. It was a very hippy dippy group, but they loved their children and all pitched in. If something happened it would have been a shame if one of the parents would have been unable to see their children.

FUCKING MONSANTO AND THEIR GMO BULLSHIT!
