What are your feelings about this?

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

And this freakin' guy.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

He was pretty good on the keyboards, too. Not just piano. Check out the drummer, who is still one of the best ever.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Wakeman would be my #2. Both he and Emerson classically trained (the 2nd Emerson video is Aaron Copeland inspired). Wakeman went to the Royal College of Music at age 14 (amazing accomplishment).

Emerson does with his left hand what Rudess does with his right hand, which is what is so amazing about Emerson's playing. That is, Emerson has two right hands or he's ambidextrous.

It's too bad that Emerson got into drugs and alcohol, which basically destroyed his career about 30 years too soon. Wakeman is still playing

And, FWIW, ELP was (to me) the best 3-man band ever, Yes (Wakeman's band), the best 5 or 6 man band. I'm talking about the average level of talent in the band. Genesis is way up there.

They're all great musicians. I don't have any of Emerson's music. I don't know the other guys. Personally, I think that synthesizers are just toys--playing fast takes talent, but it isn't necessarily good music. I'd wish I could play like that, but to be critical, a synthesizer is NOT a piano; and in the first clip, Emerson doesn't display any real touch--he's just playing notes really fast. Here's a teenager from the former USSR--Estonia? I can't remember--who is a tremendous prodigy, but he also doesn't display much touch. He's very young, though.

here is some solo work he did on an electronic keyboard

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

but there's only one master, everyone else is just a wannabe.

Don't laugh. I'm no big fan of country music, but here's Roy Clark, star of that hit tv show (LOL) Hee Haw. I always thought he was a pretty amazing guitarist.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

This guy's about 100 years old when this was done, but he invented the electric guitar and multitrack recording and was a brilliant guitarist at any age.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

And here's Eddie Van Halen giving him some props:

This is just too good not to add.

Yeah, it's way harder to play lead type stuff on an acoustic.

I noticed Jan Hammer in the Van Halen video above. Here he is with another great guitarist (too many greats!), Jeff Beck:

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Drops the pick at 1:04.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

A lot of great dummers, too.

This guy is my #1 or #2:

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Loved the Jose Feliciano.

I'm not going to play fair

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

The two greatest drummers of all time.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Keith Moon wails on the drums throughout this whole song. Well, every song too

Townsend gets himself a new pick off the amps behind him at about 3:40 in.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Best concert I even went to. House of Blues in Vegas, about 300 people in the audience. My pick for best drummer, but check out the guitar player and bass player, too. Downright amazing. They're both like 17.

Same song as in post #4.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

More Carl Palmer Band. Bass solo.

It really is a bass guitar.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

No Wakeman in this version of the band.

Dumpy,

I only saw ELP play live once. They were touring the USA with a 40 piece orchestra in about 1977 or 1978. It was a pretty big deal on the news and all in Chicago, and it took days to set up Soldier Field. The thing about Emerson wasn't just his playing it was his writing and his training.

here's his piano concerto #1

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

And here's ELP doing Pirates (the greatest "pirate" song ever!
). They needed the 40 piece orchestra to do both pieces.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Pirates pt 2:

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mL9d-6x6ml4&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

thanks for that, he's a great musician. Maybe I'll seek out some of his recordings.

I'll give a clip of one more pianist. This is someone from a long time ago, and there are very few videos of him performing, although thankfully a number of recordings. Not only is his technique incredible but he was nearly completely blind, which makes it all the more amazing. I have several of his recordings, and they are almost intimidating to listen to.

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

Nice!

Question - do you play an instrument?

Props to Denny for bringing up Jeff Beck. I'm kinda in love with his music right now.

Considering I've been playing an instrument for almost 40 years, I am nowhere near as happy with my abilities as I'd like to be...

I play guitar, bass, keyboards/piano and drums. I just started playing drums last christmas.

This is my favorite Jeff Beck song. Listen to how he builds drama by spacing out his notes. He's a real craftsman.

My favorite guitar player, playing one of my favorite songs. The studio version is one of my reference tracks to test headphones.

Another of my favorite guitarists. He died of cancer this week at only 41.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

I'm a bass player, so we need some Victor Wooten on here. My favorite bass player of all time.
<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

also this one

And how about some John Frusciante and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

<div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
