Your Favorite Sports Players

<div id="post_message_756654">I don't think this has ever been done, but if possible list your all time 10 favorite sports players. This doesn't have to be a list of who you think is the best or who is most popular just make a list of "your" personal favorites.

10. Vernon Maxwell - Actually had a man crush on him before Hakeem. Mad Max might have been a handful at times, but you could never question dudes heart and ability to come big on the biggest stages.
9. Chris Carter - might have been known as the greatest receiver of his era if not for you know who.
8. Bernie Williams - probably won't make it to the hall of fame, but what this guy did in the post season (particulary the world series) was amazing.....the current yanks could use a guy like Bernie
7. Craig Biggio and Bagwell - I couldn't decide who I liked more, but both of these men are incapable of being seperated so they both make it together in one slot
6. Derek Jeter - had a bad post season this year, but all is forgiven for all that he's done for the yanks over the years...and no he isn't overrated....you're just a hater.
5. Vince Young - the vince jersey is coming in the mail anyday now and I will be wearing it to the Texans game...and I will expect (and enjoy) the hate I will see from jealous texans fans
4. Emmitt Smith - Emmitt and the boys are the reason I like football now...Barry Sanders was better, but you can't go wrong with E.
3. Michael Jordan - every kid growing up wanted to be like Mike just a little bit...probably the most exciting sports entertainer of our generation (although some might argue that with Ali)
2. Brett Favre - Brett can do no wrong in my eyes, even when he throws 7 INTs I'll find a way to blame someone else on the team....B. Feeve (my personal nickname for him...don't know where it came from) is showing us exactly why he IS a top 5 QB of all time
1. Hakeem Olajuwon - might be the only guy on this list that I'd actually ask for an autograph....I don't like bothering people for autographs, because

a. they are just people like you and me
b. I don't like bothering people on their free time
c. I like to keep the relationship of "fan" to an "athlete" and nothing more

I respect Hakeem for a lot of reasons both on and off the court.</div>

[Legacy]

Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Monta Ellis, Hakeem Olajuwon, Jason Richardson, Jerry Rice, LaDanian Tomlinson, Lamont Jordan, Barry Bonds, and Derek Jeter. So many more people, could make them all basketball, but limited my choices.</p>

I can't order these guys as it was tough enough to keep it to 10.</p>

Roberto Clemente - A great player and a better person. He was overshadowed by the other big name outfielders of his day, but his arm was amazing and he was always a solid hitter.</p>

Mario Lemieux - Just an absolutely amazing hockey player. It was unfortunate that he couldn't play as long as he wanted, but the comeback he made, not only to save the franchise from leaving Pittsburgh, but to get back on the ice and play was beyond words for me.</p>

Kenyon Martin - Watching him progress as a player in college from a Freshman jumping jack that tried to block every shot into the consensus National Player of the Year as a Senior was a fun ride. I'll never forget him breaking his leg in the CUSA tournament.</p>

Robin Yount - When I played short stop in little league, this was the guy I tried to play like. Sure Ozzie Smith was flashy, but Robin could hit for average and power as well as play the field with ease. Not that long ago, I found the poster I had of him when I was kid and I put it up in my sons' room.</p>

Jack Lambert - He is the middle linebacker to me. Ferocious, tough and damn good. The Steel Curtain was an amazing defense, but #58 is the guy that always stood out to me.</p>

Larry Bird - He just amazed me. Here was this goofy looking guy that could just do so many things on the court and just made the players around him better.</p>

Karch Kiraly - He skilled, he was technically sound and he could dominate both indoor and beach volleyball.</p>

Willie Stargell - What isn't to like about a guy that would use a sledgehammer in the on-deck circle? Pops leading the We are Family Pirates to the come from behind 1979 World Series title was jaw dropping.</p>

John Stallworth - He never got the attention that his better known teammates, but he did his job well and became one of my favorites because he continued playing long after the Super Bowls.</p>

Andy Van Slyke - His defense and hitting were the unsung keys to the last good Pirates teams. I just liked the way he played the game.</p>

1. Mats Sundin: I have the utmost respect for this man. He's on the verge of breaking the Leafs goal records and could break the point record by the end of his career. A class act and, in my honest opinion, the best Leaf to ever wear the C. It's a shame he's been surrounding with such crappy talent and has dealt with an unappreciative media for most of his career.
2. Alessandro Del Piero: I grew up cheering for Italy in the World Cup and this was around the time he was Del Piero was at the top of his game. He's basically the reason I support Juve. A terrific player, great leader later on, and an all-around classy individual.
3. Felix Potvin: He'll probably stand out on this list, since he was never as good as any of these players. But hockey was the first sport I really got into and he was the first athlete I really idolized. This was around '92-'93 when he was at his prime and I used to imitate his crazy acrobatic butterfly style when I played street hockey (usually failed miserably, lol). Eventually he turned out to be too inconsistent, but I always defended Felix the Cat.
4. Joe Carter: This was back when I still cared about baseball, but I think every Torontonian would place that World Series-winning homer as one of the their greatest sports memories of all time. He was one of the best players on the only Toronto sports team I've ever seen win a championship.
5. Barry Sanders: Simply an incredible football player. Before I had chosen an allegiance to a certain team or even fully understood the game, I was always in awe of his highlight reel runs. Plus he was a kickass player in Madden too.
6. Patrick Ewing: Before the Raptors came into existence (and even up to the Isiah Thomas era), I always partially rooted for the New York Knicks. Ewing was their best player during their contending years and watching him really got me to appreciate the unheralded aspects of the big man game (rebounding, shotblocking, defense, etc.). Years later, when I became more of a basketball fan and began playing I always placed more importance on that side of the game.
7. Michael Strahan: Unfortunately, I missed the Lawrence Taylor era. But watching Strahan instill fear into opposing QB's as the best pass-rusher in the league was almost as good. The man was relentless and was even now, after the crap he put us through during the offseason, I was still glad to see him break the franchise sack record. The best Giant I've ever seen play.
8. Zinedine Zidane: I took notice of him during his stay with Juve, but he's been one of the greatest players I've seen play the game. A born leader and he was just so ridiculously talented that it was impossible to not have a great amount of respect for him.
9. Chris Bosh: It feels kind of weird putting such a young player here, but the Raptors are a relatively new franchise and I've been so impressed with his development since he was drafted. He was one of the main reasons I was able to survive the VC nonsense and the ensuring futility. Bosh may not be one of the greatest of all-time or anything, but I appreciate his game and his commitment to improvement.
10. Gianluigi Buffon: He's been a constant for both Juve and Italy over the years and I was happy to see him help lead the team to a World Cup a summer ago. Solidified his position here when he took less money to stay with Juventus during their Serie B demotion. That was completely unexpected, but very awesome.
