I'm in the unique position of almost not hoping for any picks. Yeah, it sucks that we had to give one up for Afflalo, but that's a sunk cost. If there's a $3M 26th pick or something available (PHI or BOS? Hello?), sure, but I don't want to give up anything of significance (and because we can't trade Meyers, Hendo or Crabbe we're a bit limited).

I don't want to see Dame or CJ leave. I don't think we'd get commensurate value for what Aminu or Davis brings to the team. Trading Vonleh would be selling low. Plumlee might bring back some value, but what? I mean, would you guys trade Plumlee straight up for Sabonis right now? What else is left?

Same here. Draft time is always exciting because every young player has the potential to be a star when realistically you'd be lucky if they turn into a contributor within 3 years. I'm mum unless there is a nobrainer type deal. Maybe buy and stash a few euros.

I've been saying this for a while. A draft pick doesn't really help us this year at all unless we pay cash and then use it in some small trade and even then I doubt it would help us much, if at all.

My assumption has been that Olshey would be only interested in an athletic rim-protecting good-sized big and/or a Euro in late first or second round. He considers this a deep draft and I think he wants the Blazers to be a title contender this year or next; so he needs assets now, either to develop by next year (2017-2018) or to use in a big trade within this time period. My feeling is that he would only use future draft assets to get into this draft, no actual players.

He would be a great fit in this offense. How high up in the lottery do you need to go to get him? Would Toronto take Plumlee and a pick for 9? Is that high enough? Is that enough going to Toronto?
We could get someone so much better than Sabonis at 9. There's a steep fall off after 7 though. If we get 9 is flip it and a future 2nd for 7 and take whoever's remaining out of Bender, Brown, Murray, Hield, or Dunn

The only site that has Sabonis at 9 is the completely wack nbadraft.net. They are much worse than Draft Express or ESPN in terms of ranking.

I bet you could get to #16 with Boston by trading the Cavs pick and Noah V.

And hopefully theyd kick in one of those 2nds for gp2

We have nobody on our roster like gp2. He would be a great fit next to cj when hes running the point. His defense is ferocious and hes an elite rebounding guard.

Your Beaver homerism is showing. If he played on the Ducks you would be arguing not to draft him.

I am a beaver homer, but gp2 is an awesome defender at a guard spot. Something we need and hes gonna be drafted in the 2nd which is cheap.

Id want us to draft a duck if i felt theyd help the team. Was a big freddie jones and aaron brooks fan back in the day.

I'm not a Beav or a Duck fan - but I agree with JFizz. GP2 will be a great defender. Dame, CJ, and GP2 would make an awesome 3 guard rotation. GP2 has a skill set that neither of the other two have.

bottom line for me is that this draft is and should be a snore for us, perhaps a late first or 2nd rdr project type player to keep PA happy, but the focus should be on FA/perhaps trades as this team is built for the next 4-6 yrs with Dame and CJ. We simply don't want to develop more than a few "project" players, we should go after players in FA that can help us NOW

Then dont take a project player. But personally i think id rather have sabonis than say vonleh, alexander, montero, connaughton, roberts.

And id rather have gp2(probably not a project player, would come cheap, and fills a giant need we have, probably would be a good defender in year 1 or 2) than connaughton, roberts, montero, alexander.

Make it happen Neil!

I'd be totally cool with Malcolm Brogdon if the Blazers grab an early/ mid 2nd. Really like that he's a ready to play guard and I think he'd complement Crabbe well. Sturdier defender that can check the bigger guards that Crabbe has issues with and has some playmaking skills. Didn't really play much in the pnr at Virginia, but he consistently makes the right reads and is just a steady presence out there on the floor (super calm demeanor, not fazed by ball pressure).

Virginia runs a very similar offensive system to Portland's as well (a lot of fade and down screens) so I think it would be a pretty smooth transition for him in that aspect. Just a bit worried that his great showing during combine 5 v 5's has pushed him up into the late first.

Refined:

Vonleh (+?) for Sabonis

Cash (and future second?) for NOP's #40

Draft Paul Zipser

If you can't buy a second in the upper/mid half and have to settle for a late second -- draft Felder or Uthoff.

It would be awesome to get Sabonis. I don't think Vonleh has much value though.

He just seems like such a Spurs guy...

Well...... Sabonis for starters.....

But no, realistically, probably take a chance on future center/rim protector and pick up a defensive minded point guard. Players we can gradually move into the rotation.

Yeah, I'm on board with this "don't get a project" concept. So is Neil for the most part, I think, since he likes to draft upperclassmen.

There are a lot of guys on this list that are interesting. GP2 at PG, AJ Hammons at C, Brice Johnson and Joel Bolomboy at PF, and particularly at the wing, where Taurean Prince, Malcolm Brogdon, Caris LeVert, Jake Layman and Sheldon McClellan all intrigue me.

I get what you're saying, but only partially agree. I've seen enough from Connaughton, Montero, and Vonleh to be intrigued. They've all got something that, if developed, could make them very useful players. The good thing is we can keep all three and still add Sabonis & GP2 without increasing the number of projects/end-of-bench players. Simply cut Alexander and Roberts in favor of Sabonis and GP2. It doesn't set us back at all (other than what we'd have to trade for those picks) - we aren't reducing the number of rotation spots, so we can still focus on adding vets to be competitive. But we've significantly upgraded our future (and likely our present).

A Sabonis/Zipser draft would make Fez very happy.

But seriously, this guy is a steal if taken in the second round.

CBS recognizes this prospect's skillset - have had him in their first-round for weeks ....to the Spurs.

Yea. Solid player. Even his name belongs on a Rip City jersey

We should snag him then!

My ideal draft day is adding someone who can help right away, preferably on the defensive end.
Yeah I just figure we'd have to pick ahead of them. If he's there at 29 the Spurs take him.

Moves and plays a lot like our boy Victor Claver but with a jumper, which would be a pretty nice player to have off the bench. Don't see us drafting a SF though with Aminu, Harkless and Montero presumably still Blazers next year. I guess he'd be nice insurance if we can't re-sign Harkless though.

Zipser has often been compared to a young Eric Piatkowski.

If anyone here remembers him -- a very solid role player who could shoot.

Trading into the first will be difficult and early seconds are a premium and are very expensive just to buy outright. There are A LOT of solid prospects in both rounds.

Target tiers:

Undrafted invites:
Yogi Ferrell
Mamdou N'Daiye

Late second:
Jarrod Uthoff
Kahlil Felder

Early/Mid second:
Rade Zagorac
Paul Zipser
Georgios Papagiannis

Mid/late first:
Juancho Hernangomez
Tyler Ulis

Lotto:
Domantas Sabonis
