Wrapping up the final details of purchasing my first home. Any recommendations/ideas you guys can give me for future purchases?

The main living room set up has space for a couch (already purchased), coffee table (purchased), chairs(1-2)/love seat, a TV and a smaller entertainment area or potential sound system.

What I'm really just looking for cool/cheaper decoration ideas, potential DIY projects, etc.

Also...any advice for a first time home-owner?

I'm in the same boat; just closed on my first house over July 4th weekend. I have so little furniture, I have no idea what to put in the spare room to really make it my own!

Thankfully I've still got some furniture that I can use from my last apartment, but IKEA is definitely looking like it's going to be my best friend in the closing month or so.

i have a small, lame apartment. i'm ecofriendly and a friend of the environment since I have such a small carbon footprint though.

i have random pieces of art around. some basquiat prints, some abstract shit...blue and white colored walls alternating.

also have a himalyan salt lamp which has gotten me laid a few times. i tell girls about it when i'm on a date and they want to see it, in my bedroom. lol.

I have a media room and game room in our home here. We went on craigs list and found a bunch of old beer signs and tin album covers for the walls.

My advice to you would be not to get married, so you won't have to give away all your stuff at some point

Or have kids. We had two extra rooms before they arrived. The boy took my man cave and my girl took the guest bedroom.

If you want a projector (which you do), let me know and I'll get you my employee discount.

Well the first thing you should probably know is "The grass is not always greener on the other side."

Best spot in the house, IMO....and I'm single. ;)

I'm currently gutting my house in Denver. I've expanded the basement by roughly 480 sf, where I've moved our mechanical room and storage room. Now I have a room for a gym, a soundproof music room (so I don't torture my family) and another bedroom suite for long term stays (family, etc.). The remainder of the space will be dedicated to a pool table (with a Ping-Pong table that can be set on it), a wet bar, a poker table and a media area. The only special thing I've purchased is a high volume air exchanger so I can smoke cigars downstairs.

God, I hate being a stereotype, but I am a typical middle aged guy.

Oops. I think you may have misunderstood me. By "mechanical room", I mean the room with my boiler, indirect hot water heater, security system, central stereo/cable system and air exchange system.

You still have a gym, soundproof music room and a high volume air exchanger (whatever that is). Still sounds like a bad ass house! Not to mention it's your HOUSE IN DENVER, versus the one in Lake Oswego? lol.

man, I do miss a basement..For the past decade we have been in a modest ranch style house that is only 1980 sq ft. I have liad caim to the family room. The seconed fridge is in the utility room a few feet away, I have all the happy stuff to hide out for days..

The "gym" consists of an elliptical machine, a Real Ryder stationary bike, a Concept II model D ergometer, free weights and a bench. I haven't even set it up yet, as the basement is still being restructured.

As for soundproofing a room, it's easier than it sounds. I picked a corner that has no windows and backs up onto our yard (using earth as soundproofing beyond the brick and concrete). I'm framing the room with 2X4 studding, putting Roxul Safe & Sound in the walls, and blowing in 10" of the same product (non-batted) in the ceiling. I'm then covering the walls and ceilings with Quietrock. The ceilings will have sound diminishing channels across the joists as well. The door will be an insulated exterior door with weatherstripping. The inside of the room will be covered with sound absorbing foam (the stuff that looks like egg cartons). It won't be perfect, but it will eliminate 80-90% of the noise.

A high-volume air exchanger just pulls the existing air from a room and then pulls in fresh air from outside and conditions it (makes it warmer or cooler) and replaces it. Most cigar rooms have the same thing. I don't mind cigar smoke, but I do mind the lingering smell.
