It's a pretty interesting idea, with the division winners getting a first round bye.

Home court advantage should be determined by the number of white guys on the roster. The NBA needs to do something. Right now it's to predictable and it's getting old.

Okay this is one helluva idea bro!!! Nice16-team single-elimination tournament for the bottom 16 teams to determine draft order, with the top 2 teams earning playoff spots alongside the 14 top teams. Then seed the playoffs by record irrespective of conference. Ends the problem of crappy teams getting playoff spots they don't deserve, and ends tanking.
Bill Simmons proposed a variation of this long before I ever did. I'm just an opportunistic plagiarist.Okay this is one helluva idea bro!!! Nice
I would rather it be teams 1-16 make the playoffs with concerence winner guaranteed seed 1-2.Bill Simmons proposed a variation of this long before I ever did. I'm just an opportunistic plagiarist.
Thing is, 16 team tournaments are simple. 14 requires byes. Plus, my way, a team could suffer a major mid-season setback but still have a shot at the title, or a young team could gel late and make an exciting run into the playoffs. Basically it opens up the possibility of an NCAA-style Cinderella story.I would rather it be teams 1-16 make the playoffs with concerence winner guaranteed seed 1-2.
The bottom 14 teams have that same playoff but the one that wins the single elimination tourney gets the first pick and so on. They could even have these games going while the playoffs are going and earn even more revenue.
$$$But why?
Not that I disagree, but devil's advocate wonders what's the motivation for average players on crappy teams to win a tournament to draft a player who is better than them who will take their jobs?16-team single-elimination tournament for the bottom 16 teams to determine draft order, with the top 2 teams earning playoff spots alongside the 14 top teams. The thought that if that player plays particularly well, the team will draft a new good player at another position instead of their position, or that they'll be sought after enough to be able to find another team that will overpay them. Not that I disagree, but devil's advocate wonders what's the motivation for average players on crappy teams to win a tournament to draft a player who is better than them who will take their jobs?
(See my edit above.)The thought that if that player plays particularly well, the team will draft a new good player at another position instead of their position, or that they'll be sought after enough to be able to find another team that will overpay them.
Or, hopefully, just their innate competitive nature and desire to win.

Well at least Mark Cuban is not afraid to make his opinion known. The NBA could really would really benefit if there was more Mark Cubans around. I love Paul but I do wish Paul had a little of Mark Cuban in him. They should remove conferences IMO and like others have mentioned just have the top 16 teams play each other. They should also reduce the amount of games played down from 82 to like 60ish like we had in the lockout year a few years ago. It reduces chance for injury, makes the players play at a higher level for more games, and makes winning every game even more important. They should also restructure the divisions to ensure there is the least amount of travel for each team possible, especially considering Portland travels a billion a a half miles a year simply because we're so geographically isolated.
Oh, as for Mark Cuban and the OP, I strongly dislike this idea as more crappy teams in the eastern conference will make it into the playoffs for really no reason at all.

Tanking would actually be more rewarding. Eliminate 4 more teams from the lottery, and for the East those are probably teams with fairly poor records.
I agree, the regular season in the NBA is like one big long pre-season. You only get eliminated if you totally suck, and you play for what? 1 home court advantage game. I like the idea of less games, with each game being more meaningful. They should remove conferences IMO and like others have mentioned just have the top 16 teams play each other. That would never happen. The amount of revenue earned from the 7 game series would stop any idea of yours from happening. Now if you add more playoff/elimination games, they would consider it.I actually think the playoffs should have less teams / games. I like the NFL model of 6 teams per conference, with the top 2 getting byes. Also, lose the conferences and seed the top 12 teams.
