I'd like to focus again on this.

The next opt-out for the CBA is in 2017. Both the 2005 CBA and the 2011 CBA extension had amnesty provisions for players signed prior to the CBA renegotiation.

I was a bit harsh when I stated it earlier, but I don't think there is any GM right now who give a crap about what the salary cap implications are past 2017. The smart thing, actually, is to sign the best players right now to the highest contract, and then know either the owners or players can opt out of the CBA in 2017.

I know, I was just asking everyone to take it down a notch. I wasn't telling or warning. Just trying to keep the tone of the discussion a bit more friendly.

Anyone? I haven't heard this discussed anywhere else, and thought of it as I was researching the long-term implications of a LMA deal as it related to the current CBA.

well don't really know how to reply to it. Don't really know if there will be an amnesty option in the next CBA. Players could say no.
If it is there and Aldridge declines terribly yes that's an option.. But I just don't think that's going to happen. I don't think people are thinking 3 or 4 years ahead. At least I'm not.. Probably why I wouldn't make a good GM. I'd think 1 year at a time if I wasn't in ""rebuild mode""

As any real GM would. In Imaginary Trade Land, you're never fired for a bad major trade idea, or a series of smaller ones, so I suppose looking 6 years down the road seems reasonable. I hadn't thought of it that way.

As for the CBA, I find it almost impossible that either the owners, or players, or both, won't want to revisit it in 2017.

I can see the owners wanting a higher draft age limit, which has already been mentioned by others.

I can see the players wanting a higher cap, which of course they should want.

The more I think about it, it's absolutely ludicrous to think that Paul Allen, Stotts, and Olshey want to do anything other than win a title next year. Trading away your best player, and Top 10 MVP vote recipient, for a 19 year-old defies all logic in the real world of winning now.

Pretty much.. Although I hate him... terribly... like he's my second most hated NBA player in the league today... I think Lin would be a good fit for the blazers.. Or a player like him. Hes younger than Mo and with rolo/Batum/Aldridge can hide him on defense a little. Would be a good backup point for Lillard and a change of pace player. Seriously think Huston is ruining his confidence.

But I HATE LIN HATE HATE HATE.
 
I don't care about his contract, we're not going to have cap room even if he signs for less, and he isn't going to sign for 8mil, that's not how much he's worth.
Still, the possibility of trading him for Cleveland's pick plus a lot of cap space is interesting. I'm now leaning against it because I think if we bring a guy like Deng or Monroe or Tristan Thompson or Pau Gasol with the cap room, we'd still miss Lamarcus.
But I certainly think it's worth considering. If we can get say Wiggins, T. Thompson for LA, McCollum, then Sign Deng, and with T-Rob's emergence, we'd be getting the 1st pick without losing That much fire-power.

I have yet to read a good reason as to why some of you think he's worth the max he's going to seek -- $127m.

LA knows this will be his last big contract, no way does he take less than the max.

Kevin Love put up better numbers than LA did this year, Griffin only trailed in the rebound department and was much more efficient. Davis was also right there with them and he is a much better defender than LA.

Dirk is too old and too one sided to be on that list Ibaka is just not good enough

How does one define what a player is worth? In revenue created? Wins contributed? Market value? Fan appreciation? Stability and cohesion? Alternative options?

He's the longest tenured Blazer. A large segment of the fan base would be very upset were he to leave. Along with Lillard, he's the face of the franchise. By that, I mean he gets national exposure, and when people outside of Portland think of the Blazers, they think of him. Other teams will likely want to offer him a $20M+ power year contract next summer. The team is basically built around him. As PapaG has pointed out, there isn't really a way to replicate what he provides of he leaves or is dealt.

I think all of these factors combined suggest he might be worth that $127M.

I think Aldridge is worth the contract, but the Blazers shouldn't give it to him. Wing and PG driven league
 
Just out of curiosity and without looking up the numbers would LMA taking less really help the Blazers? Im honestly asking, will that really leave any room to do anything with the contracts that we are set to pay out?
 
LA was underpaid with his last deal. He is going to offer no discounts this time around-- nor should he.
 
The new CBA has really changed how teams are going to pay players.

Luol Deng got a $14M salary last season. He turned down $10M x 3 year extension in Chicago. I suspect he may end up around $10M or even less.

The CBA tax penalties are ridiculous compared to the previous CBA. Even if a $billionaire is willing to pay a player $20M in salary and another $40M in luxury tax just for that contract, the CBA punishes repeat offenders and kills S&T deals for them, among other things.

Huge expiring contracts were once a sought after commodity. Not so much anymore.

Looking at who's getting what as a means of determining a comparable salary has to consider WHEN the contract was signed. Deng signed his during the old CBA days. LMA signed his current deal under the old CBA, too.

I don't think he is worth that contract but we agree on the ultimate point that we should not give it to him, that is almost 25.4 mil per yr for friggin ONE GUY taking up a huge chunk of our capspace, this is not Lebron, sorry that is IMO way too much, I'd go 20 mil per yr max - no more

Random thoughts, in no particular order:

Stott's offense is predicated on defenses having to focus on LaMarcus (aka "Dirk Light"). IOW: His value to this team is greater than his personal efficiency or production. Which is already pretty damn good.

LaMarcus is the best PF in the NBA, for Stott's offense. Although Ginger Griffin is a far superior flopper, Aldridge probably has the best all around skill set of any PF in the league.

The market will dictate how much LaMarcus is to be paid.

Every draft pick is a risk -- every single one of them. Virtually none contribute at the level of a LaMarcus Aldridge in their first few years. So if we are in win now mode now, we won't trade LaMarcus for a draft pick now.

If we are in win now mode at the end of next season, we will pay LaMarcus the market rate (whatever that is) and worry about five years from now, four years from now.

LaMarcus is likely to only consider finishing his career in one of two places: Portland or Texas. Trading him to a city like Cleveland is simply not going to happen (unless Cleveland is stupid....).

I'm not dead set opposed to trading LaMarcus, for the right deal. What is the right deal? I haven't seen it yet. Make me an offer.

I'm out of random thoughts for now. Time for work.
