Targus, for 2012 (given the current state of our recruiting class) what position(s) would you like to see the team target? Understanding that even with high recruits, we might not see them on the field for the next year or two... sounds like DE might be a weakness next year, but longer term, is there any spot that the program should look to shore up in the next six weeks or so?

* I forgot about Anthony Wallace too. 6'1", 235# FR LB - Both Rivals and Scout had him as 6th best LB in nation. The kid is just a FR and already built like a mack truck. He clocked an amazing 4.55 40 despite his size. He should be incredible.

Ed - I think our core is set for several years and right now we just offer the best talent out there at every position and see what unfolds. CB, Rover, S, DE. Keep going with what works and like others have said, go after top talent - all positions - even WR - but it's difficult right now to see how HS players fit in with so much talent. It almost seems counterproductive to be so deep because some players don't get the PT to develop. Take Maehl. He developed before our eyes and got time partly because of depth - 9 rec in 2007, 39 in 08, 53 in 09 and 77 in 10. Too much depth now??

2013 we have a verbal from Tyner and I think he could be the #1 RB in the nation by this time next year. We currently have verbals from five DE's, so sheesh. I dunno! I'm just a fan! :)

Targus, awesome and detailed post, but I'll add that Raasahn Vaugh will have 2 more years of eligibility, and not one.

I think he played two years at College of San Mateo... so that'd give him two years to play one remaining, right?

Loko is 6'3", 235#. He's an inch taller than Matthews and the exact weight now as a SO as Matthews played as a SR. He picked Luck for 6 and changed that game - his second pick six of 2011. goducks.com reports, "Led all linebackers with a 330-pound power clean, a 2.84-second electronic 20-yard and a 4.84-second electronic 40-yard during winter conditioning." Baring injury, I think he'll be one of the most feared LB's and he's only a SO.

Clay is short but has 77 tackles/42 solo, 3 sacks, 2 INTS and even missed PT with an injury. He is one of the top performing LB's in the Pac. Not the hardest hitter but he's always around the ball and his football-sense is amazing. I hear he's a great kid and leader in practice and should return for a monster SR year.

Alonso has some dependency issues but appears to have his head on straight lately. He's 6'4", 240# (typical NFL build). He was one of the few players who played his heart out against USC - 6 tackles. He's finishing 2011 strong with 12 tackles and 1 int in the last three games. I think he 'gets it' now that if he messes up again, he's probably gone. If he spends his off-season in the weight and film room instead of the bar and he has the potential to be one of the best LB's in the nation. He's already a great hitter and goducks reports, "posted the top mark among linebackers and third-best overall with a 380-pound bench press during winter testing."

Our LB's are going to be awesome in 2012.

I should have been more specific. I was thinking of a MLB with NFL size for the future. I know that Clay and Alonso both are back next year, but if the idea is to upgrade recruiting, a blend of those two should be the type of athlete to focus on, at least initially.

Total brain cramp on my part. I'll blame it on the holidays!

I sure hope White can get healthy. Thats a highly touted TE Corps with Lyerla, White, Bayless, and French.

Currently we are mainly targeting guys at these positions.

RB - We were looking at Foster, Trey Williams, and Russell Shell, but the ship has sailed for all of them. Luckily we got Tyner's verbal for next year.

WR - Thomas Johnson/Jaydon Mickens/Darreus Rogers or if we don't get either of those guys then Javon Williams(Dion Lewis) will probably commit to us right way if Oregon offers.

TE - Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick

OT - Kyle Murphy and Menelik Watson
OG - Poutasi

DE - DeForest Buckner
DE - Arik Armstead

DT - McCarthy

CB - Kevon Seymour

S - Shaq Thompson

There's obviously other guys we would take but these are the guys we are pursuing a lot. Though we will probably miss on McCarthy, Murphy, Thompson, Fitzpatrick, Mickens, Rogers, Seymour, and Armstead.

I'd like to see more action at the CB, S, Rover position.

JH over at DT is saying the staff has counted 18 commits. There are only 17 publicly known commits so that means that 1 has given their verbal to the coaches but has not yet announced it.

I'm pretty sure this is DeForest Buckner as he canceled both his trips to Cal and UCLA after Kelly's visit with him and I think he's waiting to announce at the Semper Fi game which is the day after the Rose Bowl.

I sure hope White can get healthy. Thats a highly touted TE Corps with Lyerla, White, Bayless, and French.

There has been talk of French moving over to defense but I think he'll stay as a TE.

a recent rivals article has Oregon waiting on hearing back from the NCAA on whether *4 Arizona WR & (cousin to Dion Jordan) Javon Williams will qualify before they offer. According to him, grades/SAT scores aren't the issue but rather if classes he took at a private school during his Sophmore year will count. If he clears and Oregon offers him, he's stated that he will be a Duck

Justin Hopkins says two big time linebackers who are committed elsewhere are visiting on Jan 20th. He says he can't divulge who it is at this time, but he says we have a pretty good chance of landing one of them.

Why though would we turn down a visit from Kwon Alexander but still be looking at other linebackers?

Anyways my guess is the two linebackers are Jabari Ruffin and Peter Jinkens.

Also visiting are

Byron Marshall
Stetzon Bair
Alex Balducci

Thomas Johnson
Darreus Rogers

character? qualifying issues? lack of true interest/just wants a free trip out west? Could be any number of things though I don't think it was talent

those are the rumors I've been reading. Jinkins hails from Freshman LB Anthony Wallace's HS. There is a 2013 DT from there that has Oregon at the top as well

Jinkens and Thomas Johnson are both from Skyline, which is a pipeline school for Texas. They are both (SHOCKINGLY! :) ) Texas commits.

Wallace never got an offer from Texas, otherwise I gotta think he'd have ended up there. It'd be great if we could scrape another recruit or two from Skyline because it's a heck of a football factory, but I have doubts that we'll get many with regularlity given its systematic feeding of the Longhorns.

Guess we'll see what happens after January 20, huh?

according to a rivals article, A.Wallace received an offer from Texas Feb. 2010 when he took an OV there... he ended up with offers from pretty much everybody else.

btw... the Skyline HS 2013 DT I was refering to is Kerrick Huggins. Here is a recent quote from him responding to a question of what school he hopes to play for... "Oregon - I'm a Duck fan," he said. "I love the colors and my man Anthony Wallace is up there. He and I have played together for a while and I want to keep it up."

Two things.

1. I have confirmed that Jabari Ruffin is one of the Linebackers visiting us on 1/20. The other I don't know yet but I've heard that he might actually visit 1/13.

2. Rivals has unveiled the first five stars of 2013 and wouldn't you know it Tyner is one of them.
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1311402

They are the best of the best. The players that are wanted by every program and destined to make a big impact at the college level and beyond.

Rivals.com has identified the first five-star prospects for the 2013 class and is unveiling them this week. Ten prospects have been awarded five-stars but are not ranked at this time and we will profile two each day. The next player to receive the five-star spotlight is Beaverton (Ore.) Aloha running back Thomas Tyner

Thomas Tyner, RB, Beaverton (Ore.) Aloha
Attributes: 6-0, 200, 4.38 40

Top schools: Tyner committed to Oregon in late November.

Scouting report: Tyner missed six games in his junior season with various injuries but still rushed for 1,136 yards and 12 touchdowns averaging nearly nine yards per carry. He is considered the fastest athlete in Oregon's history after becoming the state record holder in the 100 meters last track season. The Oregon commit is impressively fast with the ball in his hands and he also has great cut-back ability to create even more space in the open field. Once Tyner finds an opening there aren't many players in the country who could track him down. What's also impressive about Tyner is that he's not just a speedster, he can find holes, make defenders miss and follow blockers to gain extra yards.

Analyst's take: "Tyner has exceptional speed but what impresses me even more about him is his cutback ability and balance. I've seen multiple times where he's close to being tackled or almost falling down and then somehow gets upright and keeps running. He's not easily tackled even though he's considered a speed back. Once Tyner gets in the open field, forget about it, because he's going to score a touchdown. If the defense doesn't wrap him up somewhere near the line of scrimmage, he's capable of breaking a big run every time he has the ball in his hands." - Adam Gorney, West Analyst, Rivals.com

Why he's a five-star: "Tyner has that rare combination of speed, balance and vision that makes him a potential game-breaker at the next level. He's not a track kid playing running back but is a true football player who can avoid hits and bounce off them as well. The injury issue is a slight concern, but when you watch him on film and see the potential he has, you have to look past it. He's also a big kid, this isn't a tiny running back who can fly. This is a big back with strong legs who can gain yardage after contact as well as run away from anyone." - Mike Farrell, National Analyst, Rivals.com

His coach says: "Whether you call it game speed, this speed or that speed, he's got it. He's the fastest guy I've ever coached and that includes coaching 19 years at the college level. ... He already had speed so the things he can improve on he has improved on. He's learned to run with his shoulder pads down more, he's learned to run between the tackles better, he's just played tremendous." - Beaverton Aloha coach Chris Casey

Odds and ends: As a sophomore, Tyner rushed for 1,821 yards and 19 touchdowns and set the state record in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.35 seconds. That time was the fifth-fastest time in the nation last year. Tyner was voted the state's top offensive player as well, the first time a sophomore won the award. McDonald's fast food is a favorite for Tyner, who can also play the piano.

NFL player comparison: LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles

Cool. Thanks, STOMP. ESPN didn't have that info, and I read a Texas-based blog entry (clearly written before Feb of 2011) talking about why they weren't going to offer him.

Nice. I'll read up on him.

First off the bad news is that Oregon is out of the picture for Poutasi according to DuckTerritory Not too happy with how OL recruiting went this year, considering when only have one that's a JC.

Good news is that Pharo Brown will be announcing this weekend and it sounds like Oregon is the favorite

He didn't say Oregon is out of the picture, it's just that he's not visiting. He'll be announcing tomorrow and he said he's choosing between Oregon, Utah, and Oklahoma State. Though we probably are on the outside looking in.

the speculation I've read is that Poutasi will declare for the Utes. I'm not so concerned about the OLine recruiting this year as they're pretty stocked with talent... next cycle it will be more of a priority. That said, Murphy is the guy I'm really hoping for above all others they're reported to be after.

Pharoah Brown would be another solid addition. We're the only school he's visited since the falling out with Michigan...

thats quite a bit of TE's.. wonder if French will end up on Defense?

Hmm unless Brown Redshirts next year (if he commits that is) That would leave Lyerla, White (who I dont know if can be counted on healthwise) and French. I would think if Brown redshirts, French has to stay at TE, cause we would be awfully thin with only Lyerla and White. Although we would have two FR coming in (Brown and Baylis)

Looks like Brown put on a Ducks hat :)

Poutasi is going to Utah.

Ed O.

As you all know by now Brown is a Duck. He was also named the West MVP for the OD Bowl.

So I think that is 18 commits and a guy on DT said we're probably saving the last spots for 1 OL, 1 WR, 1 RB, 1 DL, 1 MLB/CB.

Interesting. Baylis is having a huge year....

I anticipate a few offensive guys moving to defense. Brandon Bair came to Oregon as a two star, 235# TE. Mike Bellotti: "He's the line of scrimmage that we lose in Tim Day," Bellotti said of Bair. "Certainly we expect him to step in (TE) and help and we need to get him ready to go."
