Being that he's only 24 years old, it's also a good candidate for a "breakout season".

I guess anything is possible, but given his horrendous defense and "garbage man" skillset, I'm not sure I'd bank on that. In any case, if you want to know how valuable Hickson is around the league just scroll through the various sports news sites and see how many times he's mentioned. 30 teams and lot of them with cap room don't seem to be all that enamored.

People don't do deals out of goodwill. When two similar deals are on the table maybe, but in this case Smith is clearly a better haul.

Which "Smith" are you referring to, Josh? If so, he's a much better player and more in-line with Houston's vision of what they want out of their 3s and 4s in their wide-open style of play.

Maybe. But, Josh Smith's lack of a jumper really causes problems on the offensive end. How will they fit 3 guys in the paint? (Harden/Howard and Smith does what?) And there is the problem of Salary, of which Smith will command a contract probably double what JJ will get. MAX for Harden, MAX for Smith and a SUPER MAX for Howard. No way they have those contracts. Only NY and LA with their crazy TV deals can do that.

I think Josh Smith is not a great fit for a Howard/Houston team.

Exactly. Plus, Smith is a high-usage player, as are Harden and Howard. Putting all three together will lessen the effectiveness of at least one of them; Hickson would cause no such conflict, as he doesn't need the ball to be effective.

Not sure how that is legal...

Hopefully the NBA is as strict as the IRS. That would have to be considered part of his total compensation if it is linked to his Lakers contract, right? I mean, it's really not like a separate endorsement deal in this case?

They can sign-and-trade their own free agents immediately. the Dec. 15 waiting period only applies if you sign a free agent from another team, or if the trade isn't agreed to as part of the conditions of the signing.

No I don't think they do at all. They might be more inclined to trade with GM's who are historically easy to get along with but they don't have "wink wink" totally committed deals. They are in the business of maximizing their own roster for their boss who writes the checks.
