Gortat isn't great either. Maybe good. But if healthy Kaman is just as good. And I would expect all three to give us at least 80% of what Gortat would. I'd much rather keep our assets and take an 80% version of Gortat, than give up our assets for the 100% version of Gortat.
Also, we should keep in mind that Gortat has only played about 60 games in each of the seasons he's played with PHX (sure, one was shortened) - this is the team that keeps their players healthier than any other team in the league. So, for me, that puts his health on par with Kaman's.

I agree with this. We also have to keep in mind that Gordat is a UFA at the end next season, so although I would like to get him, I do not want to risk a young asset if he decided to go some where else. Keep building though the draft and adding the best FA's possible.

It's a shame Gortat isn't a FA this year, i'm not very interested in him either if we have to give up the pick. I'm not high on Zeller either, but i'd rather roll the dice with him and Leonard than a guy that may bolt next summer.

Those are all "Stop-gap" centers non of which are great. Dalembert has always been good defensively but has no offensive game and is old, Pachulia is a worse version of Dalembert and Kaman has never been known as a defender and is decent offensively but none of those guys are anything to but stop-gaps.
You have guys you will have to overpay that have potential in Timothy Mozgov, Pekovich(will probably be out of our price range), Tiago Splitter all of which are RFA
Then you have the Veterans that all have huge ?? in them in guys like Al Jefferson/Andrew Bynum
There doesn't seem to be a "No Duh!" Type FA Center this off season like last off season while there are lots of guards/wings that would be great bench players that we can add. That to me just screams that we will try and move our pick to get a center, which is our biggest need, during the draft and not wait until FA to get one.

I agree that they're all stop-gap centers - but so is Gortat. That's going to be the case for our C position next season, unless we make a block-buster trade.

Ive always wondered how much the CBA allows for bonuses and incentives. If he was healthy and performed he would be worth it.

We have much different views on Gortat. I don't think Kaman is near as good defensively but a little better offensively. Healthwise last year was the only year Gortat has really been injured, which you could credit due to his role in Orlando more then anything, but at the moment last year is the only year with health concerns for him.
Gortats a great fit next to LA because he doesn't seem to mind doing the dirty work that LA seems to shy away from. He also is on a one year deal which we can either extend and then look to trade him when/if Meyers develops or let him walk to free up capspace next summer.
Gortat fits nicely with what olsheys said about targetting a center on draft night and what LAs said about wanting to play next to a true center. I'd much rather have Gortat then Mcgee/Jordan that seem like they could be had for a lottery pick as well.

The fact that he's on a one-year deal is the main reason why it would be tough to give up a lottery pick for him. I guess it really depends on who that pick ends up being, or if there's some other asset/player that Phoenix would send along with Gortat.

Thats a reason I'd rather have him then a different center with maybe more potential but a higher price tag and years. With this new CBA it seems like one big bad contract can really really fuck your team over and with two big contracts on the books and one more coming up in a few years in Lillard things can get dicey quickly

Yes we do. But even supposing your view is more correct than mine, I don't see him having an appreciably better impact on how the team performs than Kaman/Dalembert/Pachulia. With all 4 of those Cs we top out as a 1st-round exit team. So if the end result is the same, what sense does it make to pay the highest price rather than the lowest price?
And I'm not particularly fond of the idea of trading for McGee or Jordan either - but I would rather go that route than the Gortat route. At least with McGee/Jordan they have youth/potential on their side which has a better chance of being traded for something of value in the future. I don't think Gortat will bring much back in a deadline deal.

Shouldn't POR be trying to maximize thier draft picks\cap space?

I'd rather see them address a big man in the draft than in free agency or thru trade, the options out there are not that appealing...Gortat would be ok, but at a cost of a draft pick AND cap space....not sure it is worth it, lots of other holes to fill besides center....

Best case scenario would be POR getting that #13 from DAL, that would allow them to address a big man @ #10 or #13 and go BPA with the other pick, preferably a wing player....

I think they should stay away from project big men like Adams\Gobert & Nogiera....I like Len, and he is a better project IMO, but they would have to trade up for him, not sure what cost would be to do so...

I think if POR wants a "rim protector" defensive type center right now then they should look for guys who can step in Day 1 and provide some defense and are more polished, Dieng or Withey...That would allow the team to maximize that cap space to go after a wing player in FA, there are some good above average options out there....

So I think you weigh it as Gortat or Dieng\Withey and FA wing (Redick, Mayo, Ellis, Evans, possibly Iguodala, JR Smith, Tony Allen, Young, even a SF like Josh Smith (moving Batum to SG?)....I'd rather have the latter

But with Gordat being a free agent next summer, we would have to add yet another big bad contract to keep him. So wouldn't that make it worse?

I'm torn on this. I think Gortat is definitely the safest option. But I'm also intrigued about any untapped potential from Jordan and McGee, and like that they're younger than him.

I don't know that there is really all that much untapped potential in Jordan and McGee. They each have 5 seasons under their belt. It isn't like they have been in the league a short time. There is more there then Gortat, I agree with that but these guys aren't going to magically turn into All-Stars (especially when they foul so much that they can't stand on the court) imo.

I am pro Mcgee. Obviously the highest bust potential, but also the highest reward potential

Kaman is not just as good, nor is there a chance in hell he is or stays healthy

I think of Tyson Chandler when I think of them. He was very similar early on. Good rebounder. Good shot blocker. Fouled too much. Tried too often to block shots. A better help defender than man defender. Fairly inept on offense. As guys age, they obviously won't make the huge leaps that players do in their first 2-4 seasons. But they generally begin to learn the game a lot better. Learn how to not foul so much(Chandler went from 5.1 per 36 his 5th season to 3.1 this past season). And learn to play actual defense, again Chandler won DPOY last year after 11 years in the league. Been all defensive team the last 3 seasons.

Are either of them going to show that same sort of growth? Maybe not. But by untapped potential, I'm not thinking they turn into a 20-10 sort of player. Just refining and improving what they already do well. I don't think that's too much to ask. Both are still only 25.

And I don't know that either has really received much coaching. It sounds like Karl just wrote McGee off early on - so even though he's arguably a good coach, I wonder how much effort he put into trying to teach McGee how to defend within a team concept. Not that I think Stotts is a great defensive mind that is going to shape McGee into an All-NBA defender - but he might at least be patient with him and give him the court time needed to develop.
Again - I'm not stoked on the idea of McGee, but if the choice is McGee or Gortat that's an EASY choice for me.

Good points, RR7, but Chandler was supposed to be that good coming in. It just took him a while to find his pro game. The other guys were never regarded as having that degree of impact, were they?

I am not stoked about any of them either. So for me it just comes down to which one can we get the cheapest. Giving up a lottery pick is not cheap. I am not talking in terms of dollars but rather assets. In short I want to keep the pick. (Unless it gets us a really good player which doesn't seem to be an option)

I understand that the pick is as risky as these veteran centers, but I really want a chance at both.
