I read somewhere else that they sent all three because if they didn't, it could signal who they would trade, and if it fell through..... that could go bad for LAC.
That makes perfect sense.

So if they were sending out Blake:

How much cap space do they need to generate? Blake is making $20,140,838 according to Basketball-Reference.

So if we send out CJ who is making $3,219,579 next season, that still leaves $16,921,259 that we would have to eat on our cap. Let's say hypothetically we sign Whiteside for $22.5 million. We would have another $5 million in space, so that would leave roughly $12 million that we would have to clear. It's doable but we'd have to renounce Meyers and probably trade Aminu for nothing.

Maybe we renounce Leonard, and trade CJ/Aminu for Griffin/Wilcox. That gives LAC enough space to sign Durant, gives the Clippers a complete starting 5, and works within the cap.

it says in the post that they are going to try and convince him to take a discount

If they could get someone to take JJ Redick for Cap Space, they could offer him $24M/year with raises. Maybe they do that with an opt out very soon.

Don't forget the $500K+ charges for open roster spots up to 13. They'd need to ditch Pierce too.

To protect themselves, the opt-out couldn't be any sooner than 2018. If he's looking at doing something like that, why wouldn't he just stay in OKC for one year instead of being underpaid in LA for 2 years?

We already didn't renounce Biebs, we can't anymore.

No, that's not how it works. Qualifying offers can always be rescinded until they're accepted. If we need the cap space currently allocated to his cap hold, we can renounce him (or Crabbe or Harkless) at any time.

OK, thanks (but, if seriously, if he was going to, he probably would have already).

To me, CJ is a trade asset. Allen Crabbe is a capable starter, which means CJ can be used to acquire a similar star player at another position of need. Power forward is a weakness right now. If we can sign a quality center, then power forward is the next position that needs to be upgraded. Seems logical to me.

I completely disagree. When you have an RFA, you almost always extend the QO, because it basically doesn't cost you anything. Always good to retain options for as long as possible.

You're probably right, but this isn't what the Rockets did with T. Jones.

But what PF do you have in mind that is of at least equal value or close to what CJ brings to us?

If we trade CJ then SG would be a weakness that we would need to upgrade.

Some examples of Qualifying Offers pulled in the past after extending them to a player:
Celtics and Jeff Green in 2012 (Heart issue had a lot to do with this though)
Pacers and Tyler Hansbrough in 2013
Magic and ETwaun Moore in 2014

There are others and it is rare but it does happen.

CJ moved past the trade asset stage and is on the brink of franchise player stage. His value to us is greater than what it is to any other team because of his connection with Dame on and off the floor.

"Damian Lillard said Neil Olshey has briefed him on the Trail Blazers’ free agency plan, and the star point guard said it left him feeling “excited.’’

Lillard said he is “somewhat” in the know of Olshey’s plans when free agency opens Thursday night at 9 p.m. Portland time, but he chose to let Olshey’s actions do the talking.

“I will keep that in house,’’ Lillard said. “You all will find out soon.’’

Lillard was coy when asked whether he is scheduled to meet with free agents, saying “maybe … maaaaybe” while smiling and rubbing his chin."

You get the feeling Dame has a pretty good idea
and that Neil has run at least his fairly specific direction passed Dame to see what he thinks and out of courtesy to the acknowledged Blazer leader.

Quick: Dame is excited about our FA plans.

Dame is getting involved in some capacity. I like this.

I love this kid

Much of that culture has been fostered by the leadership of Lillard, and on Thursday Lillard said he will be up front in addressing any potential character flaws with a free agent.

“When I speak to these guys, I’m going to tell them what it is with our team and how we do things, and what will be tolerated and what won’t be,’’ Lillard said. “If we happened to get someone who, like you said, has red flags – we don’t know for sure if that’s he-said, she-said, or if it’s real. Or if it’s the situation, or the people around him, or what.

“But if it comes to our culture or this individual, it will be addressed. Ain’t nobody going to back down to nobody or let someone come in here and think something is going to change, because it’s not. It’s not just me. I will be the first one to say something, because that’s just what it is,’’ Lillard said. “But I know CJ (McCollum) is going to back that up and each guy down the line is going to back it up. We show up to practice each day to work , we show up on time, we hold each other accountable and we allow out teammates to hold each other accountable and that’s the bottom line. We don’t do the cute stuff … we show up and do what we do, that’s it. If you don’t want to do it, then it won’t work.’’

This quote almost sounds like it's aimed at Howard.

I just saw a report that the mavs are gonna meet with Batum - How the heck are they gonna sign Conley , Batum and Whiteside ?

I wonder if Dame got some floor mats with that used car Neil sold him?
