Michelle Obama Copied Alinsky in Speech Melania Trump Allegedly Plagiarized
Trump’s wife joins Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden as accused plagiarists. Even Michelle Obama was accused of plagiarizing part of her own 2008 DNC speech.

Barack Obama: “Don’t tell me words don’t matter.” As then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) surpassed Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, largely on the strength of his oratory, Clinton said that Obama’s record was “just words.” Obama responded in a speech whose refrain was lifted from then-Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. The Obama campaign did not even bother to refute the claim. Instead, it circulated examples of lines that it said Clinton herself had borrowed from Obama. The left media defended Obama, saying that he had not committed plagiarism, but merely, at worst, “poor footnoting.”
Hillary Clinton: “No bank can be too big to fail, no executive too powerful to jail.” After the Obama campaign accused Clinton of stealing lines in 2008 — a claim supplemented by The New Republic, which accused her of stealing lines from then-Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) — she ought to have learned her lesson. But in 2016, she stole lines from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who responded by telling NBC News’ Meet the Press, jokingly: “We’re looking into the copyright issues here.” Clinton was accused of lifting other lines, too — and Sanders supporters responded on Twitter with the wry hashtag: #StealtheBern.

Joe Biden: “My ancestors who worked in the coal mines…”. Biden was found to have borrowed heavily from the oratory — and the biography — of British Labour Party leader Neal Kinnock, without attribution. In addition, it was discovered he had committed plagiarism while in law school. The scandal helped bring down Biden’s presidential campaign in 1988 — though Biden’s angry outburst at a reporter — “I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do, I suspect” — didn’t help, either.

Michelle Obama: “…the world as it should be.” In 2008, the aspiring First Lady was accused by bloggers of lifting lines for her DNC speech from Saul Alinsky. Alinsky wrote, in Rules for Radicals (emphasis added): “The standards of judgment must be rooted in the whys and wherefores of life as it is lived, the world as it is, not our wished-for fantasy of the world as it should be.” Michelle Obama said: “And Barack stood up that day, and he spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about ‘the world as it is‘ and ‘the world as it should be.'” (Perhaps Mr. Obama who left out the attribution.)

F. H. Buckley IS their speechwriter, and he borrowed from his article in writing the speech, so nothing to see here.

I think the issue is less Ms. Trump's gaffe than the campaign and how they responded. If they can't handle something relatively trivial, how do they handle running the country?

Day 2 was supposed to be make America work again. Apparently the only job to be created is Investigator of Hillary's Emails. Almost no mention of the candidate. Or jobs.

The former governor of Hawaii made a fairly innocuous remark about strengthening ties with Israel. Democrats and Republicans are both on record in favor of strong ties with Israel. She added that would appeal to Jewish voters (who broke 2/1 for Obama and even more lopsided for Clinton over Trump). The RNC had to close the Comments section of their web site after it was inundated with anti-Semitic bile (press H for Hitler, put her in the ovens, were some of the more printable ones).

First off, the FBI specifically said she didn't lie to them.

But here's why Melania's speech matters.

1. Donald Trump doesn't know shit about governing, public policy, foreign policy, the economy, etc..

2. That's supposedly ok, because Donald Trump is going to hire great, really great, the best people to help him.

3. Donald Trump didn't actually hire really, really great people for the campaign. He hired his kids and random golf caddies and people with questionable backgrounds.

4. As a result, his campaign is a rolling dumpster fire, and nobody even thought to supervise the speechwriting.

5. If he can't staff his own campaign, why should we expect him to be able to staff the executive branch well? Note that a campaign is much more similar to a business (his supposed strength) than the government is to a business.

So in conclusion, The Donald doesn't know shit about doing the job, and he's highly likely to hire incompetent friends/family/fringe characters to help him.

That's why Melania's speech matters. It's a symptom, not the problem.

Great opinion piece.. Write that yourself? Most of what you write is in fact conjecture.

They really need to fire their speechwriters

Absolutely. Exactly why I said earlier in a post that it happens all the freaking time in politics. (or maybe I wrote that on another place, either way....)

The fact that America cares more about her taking 3 sentences out of a speech over Hillary lying to the FBI is beyond crazy to me.

THE OUTRAGE!

Hillary has been (rightfully) vilified for over a year her email shenanigans.

Trumps wife has been laughed at for a few days.

and not only are you comparing the two, but you are saying that trumps wife has it worse?

i mean, where do you even come up with this shit?

As if the FBI has never lied to anyone......c'mon man

I am not debating whose had it worse. But have you seen the news sites? Its pretty evident which agenda they like to push. Hilary's cast of news sites loves to just quietly let this go and the minute some stupid speech fuck-up happens, its front page, big bold letters and pictures.... fucking please.

Where do I come up with this? CNN.COM is a good starter place.

At least they didn't lie about Benghazi being about an Internet video or an illegal home brew mail server.

lets see is mrs trumps dumb fuck speech is still on the front page a year from now.

i mean, one day a year, everyone in the forum cares more about the nba draft than the holocaust. OUTRAGE!

lying to fbi, leaking classified emails, hiding shit about it, making headlines, appropriate.

A speech which lifted 3 sentences makes headlines? really?

You don't see the difference here? the agenda bias is obvious, yet I do understand news cycles, so believe me, you're not uncovering something groundbreaking there mr. brain-dude. look past your sulci and gyri to see the bigger picture here.

edit: oh i forgot..... OUTRAGE!

Yes, I did write that myself. Michelle Obama did not contribute in any way.

Yes, it is my opinion. Shocking to find someone expressing an opinion on this board, I know, but I'm the type of guy who pushes the boundaries.

Benghazi? Binders of Women. Which is the real news story?

Hmmmm...

OK I LOL'd there. :)

At this point, neither one is news.

barfo

They both occurred at the same time in 2012. Rather than report on Benghazi (which the administration lied about, Hiliar lied about), Binders of Women got all the press.

The effect was to bury the news that Obama's foreign policy was in flames, which would have hurt his reelection chances.

It speaks to Obama's allies in the mainstream press' motives. Not journalism but to elect their candidate.

Granted, Romney couldn't beat a weak opponent.

I'm way too lazy to do it, but I'd bet that if I looked, I'd find that Benghazi got way more press than 'binders of women' at the time, and has continued to ever since.
Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

You're too scared to find out.

i guess im just not sure what it is that you want. hillary made headlines for over a year about her emails. do you want to read about her emails forever? and ever?

its the top story on the notoriously liberal foxnews.com as well btw.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box...ia-spent-more-time-analyzing-melania-than-fbi

Trump: Media spent more time analyzing Melania than FBI spent on Clinton

Do you want us to believe that? I thought you wanted us to believe that the FBI had 150 agents investigating Hillary for the past year (...and that she was surely going to be indicted).

Since they only had a day to investigate Melania, the media must have had 365*150 = 54,750 people working on the plagiarism case.
