Event 2017 NBA draft thread - March 2017 edition

Haha. Harkless is a SF, Onunoby can play both. Anunoby has the potential to be better than Aminu quickly. He'd probably shoot the same from 3 and Anunoby's defense is on par with Aminu. Anunoby would be $6M cheaper than Aminu if he fell to the CLE pick, and he's bigger (6'8 with a reported 7'6 wingspan) so he could play some smallball center. If Anunoby can become a shooter, he'll be a great NBA player. His benchmark for shooting is where Aminu and Harkless are already at.

You wouldn't want to take this guy, who was a projected Top 10 pick before his injury, with the 26th pick in the draft?

Come on man, rookies don't just come in and dominate defensively, and he's going to better than Aminu?

I mean if he fell to the Cleveland pick, sure, I'd take him, but is that realistic?

Aminu doesn't dominate defensively. He's above average. Just like Anunoby would be.

And yes, it is realistic, because he just tore his ACL. Labissiere fell to 28 last year. It's very possible.

The probability is that it will take him years to reach Aminus level of defense. He's especially raw compared to other young players coming into the league. Nevermind the injury (which will keep him from working on his game), you could tell watching him play that he's still mainly a project that's going to require patience. I'm not against him, but don't expect him to just come in and replace an Aminu.

And if he actually falls to the Cleveland pick, I'd absolutely take him.

He won't take years to become an above average defender, that's ridiculous.

Averaged over 2 steals and 2 blocks a game last year.

Shooting is still a bit of a mess but really liking everything else about PJ Dozier. Their tournament run might push him to leave early too.

Reminds me of a taller George Hill.

Really like the look of Jarrett Allen if he's available. I'd like us to take another potential PF and possibly a SF.

NBAdraft.net has Jordan Bell in the first round now. I know it's just early projections and we still have camps to go through, but seeing his upward tick isn't surprising. If he continues his strong tournament play it wouldn't surprise me to see him climb to the early twenties.

I can't wait to hear all the bitching and crying on this board if Olshey passes on him.

Honestly I can't see that happening. Duck basketball fans are not that passionate or loyal at this point. I am one of the biggest ones around and I could care less if we drafted any of them. They are role players at best.

Ronnie Lee was the last one I was pissed that we passed on. But, as it turned out, Lionel Hollins was the right choice at the time.

I don't think any rookie is going to come in and play, let alone start, unless we make some sort of trade, and honestly, with the way this team is looking after the addition of Nurkic, I don't think Allen will give a shit about luxury tax payments. This isn't a fluke imo. This is a legit 55+ win team next season, and that's without anyone taking a leap in their personal game. The only real moves we'll see is going to be at center, behind Nurkic.

So with that said, we could easily just draft three of the best available players without having to worry about filling a specific need, or relying on any of them to play.

Having multiple picks also opens the door to take high risk/reward players such as Harry Giles.

Tell me that personality doesn't fit on this Blazers team. Looks pretty natural in that setting as well ;)

Imagine if we took Giles with the pick Denver gave us and he panned out......................

Yeah if we kept all three picks and 2 of two of them were solid choices, I am all for gambling on the 3rd for a high risk high reward target.

Was never really impressed with Giles' talent even pre multiple knee surgeries.

He'd be a fine gamble with the cle pick but I think he and Vonleh are pretty redundant.

I don't know why we're even arguing about OG, we both like him, you don't have to convince me, I just disagree that he's instant impact.
Defense is based on athleticism, length, and hustle. He's a plus in all 3. Why wouldn't that translate right away?

IQ/positioning/pattern recognition plays a huge part as well. All of which only come with experience.

Pretty much this. OG's defensive dominance in college was more physical than mental (the stuff JDC listed plus instincts) It'll even out at the next level and it'll take time before the mental side catches up.

Yes. That's why he'll only be above average at first. He has the tools to be an elite defender. One the mental side catches up like @Scalma says, he should be elite.
